I everyone. Long time reader and about 1st time poster. LOTS of good advise.
My 292 oil filter adapter is leaking. The problem is, plenty of articles on the adapter, but not one on removing it. I know its pressed in, but I cannot figure out how to get it out. ANY help is appreciated. The motor is still in the car. Is there a puller? Or major prying involved?Which means I have to order a new one and tap it in.

It's not pressed in. Over time it can effectively become glued on. If RTV was used, it can be stuck in place. And, of course, you do have to loosen the nut in the center. You will have to carefully pry it out. If it's really stuck, I'd use a heavy duty pick through one of the holes and force it off and replace it with a new one. It's better to trash the adapter than to gouge the block.

charlie is spot on with his advice. The plates can be "stuck" pretty good after years of old oil, paraffin wax, and you name it. Gunk likes to build up behind the plate... always best to remove those things when you are doing this kind of work. A little tip: take a blunt chisel tip and place it on the edge of the oil slot (this should be clocked at about 12 on your plate bolted to your block). tap a little sideways, each way, and the plate should come loose. You could also try a pry bar to lever it out too, but if you are going to reuse your old one (sounds like you might need to replace it) don't warp it. I "think" the hold down nut size is 1 and 1/16"...

Thank you. I kind of thought that. I will be ordering one tonight. I had planned on it. Should I squirt some PB blaster on it? Just making sure I am doing it right.

you really shouldn't need any PB blaster because the whole works should be pretty oily already. However, the socket you use may be interesting if the rim thickness is too wide. I have heard of guys having to trim down the outside diameter of their socket to get the socket to slide down further on the nut that retains the plate. By the way, usually these notes are in place pretty tight... I normally use a 1/2" drive breaker bar and socket to remove the nut.

by nut, are you talking about the 3/4-16 nut that the filter screws into? If so, that is already off. But the plate just does not want to come off easy. Is there another nut I do not see?

ditto. Go ahead and try to pry it off. i would not worry too much if you mangle it up. there are enough of us on this site that would be more than happy to send you another. I know that I would.  You can always upload a photo of it just to make sure.let us know how it turns out.

Cool. Thanks. That is good to know. I already have the guy on eBay sending me one because I think my old one will be destroyed in the removal
