F600 HEAVY DUTY 292

Greetings to all: I have found a 61 F600 that has been sitting in a bone yard in Michigan for aprox. 30 years. The VIN is F60DP120816. Being a "D" code 292 should make it a heavy duty version. I don't think it has sodium cooled valves but it may have a forged steel crank and heavy duty rods. If memory serves me right, which it often doesn't, somewhere I read the shorter 312 rods were used in these engines as a cheap way to lower the compression ratio? Would this be worth pursuing? That is, assuming the crank and rods are serviceable. Thanks, JEFF...................

If it is intact, and reasonably priced, buy it!  Most had 4 barrel intake manifolds and rams horn exhausts too.  What's not to like?

You may want to get casting #s off the block & heads. That may confirm whether or not the engine is likely to have what you are looking for. Link from here to John Mummert's site for casting info. A correct 61 truck engine is likely to have some H.D. parts.

I would jump on it after checking the block number to see if it's an original engine!

Greetings everyone: I tried posting a picture but it bounced due to excessive content. It may be that my camera is set at the highest resolution? A little about this 61 F600: The intake is long gone and it has the usual single exhaust with the under hood cross over pipe. I believe the sodium cooled valves were discontinues about 1960 so that may explain the lack of ram manifolds. When I raised the hood, there was about a foot of leaves on top and looks like water may have entered the ports at some time. I haven't tried to turn the crank yet but at this point, I think the rods and crank may be the only things of value. The casting ID at the coolant port is the same as what's on my stock 64 F100 so this may reinforce the "no sodium valve" theory. This truck is about 400 miles from where I live in lower Michigan. If I can get this engine cheap enough I may then try to have it delivered to my place up there. Could be this fall or next summer. Does anyone know if these HD 292's used the 312 length rods?

I owned a 1963 C-600 w/HD 292.  It had sodium cooled valves, rams' horn exhaust, 4 bbl. intake.  It also had a Leese-Neville alternator, dual fan belts, etc.  I know it was original because my dad bought it new.   What you are describing is not consistant with a "true" HD 292.  Check the numbers very carefully.  After 50 years, who knows what sort of mischief has been done to that motor.  Caveat emptor for sure!
