DOes anyone know what the towing capacity is for a 56 f100 with a 292 engine and a three speed manual trans? or if anyone thinks it shas the capability of towing a 3000 lb boat?

Everyone worries about towing cap. If the engine and clutch are good, it may be ok.

You should be more concerned about STOPPING though, with that capacity behind you. Trailer brakes are a must, as well as a well inspected brake system on the vehicle. You want to make sure there is NO pulling of the front brakes to either side, as is quite common in our old stuff.

Check it all out you'll be glad you did.

Twice a year I pull our camper. It weighs about 5500. Electric brakes are a must and a weight distributing hitch. I have a 4.27 rear and depending on the grade you slip the clutch quite a bit to get started. The creeper gear tranny would be great, but I couldn't race as well.

I am going to tow my 5000lb boat with my F-600......which has HUGE brakes but I also wouldn't do it without trailer brakes.

The other thing with a boat is that you may have some problem with an empty-bed pickup on a slippery ramp.

Also, I would want at least a 4-speed trans with a low-range first gear (I have a 2 speed axle with 8.11:1 ratio in low range and an automatic trans)

Cheers,
