Do you have to remove the front carrier to change the pinion seal?

You can do it under the car by removing the driveshaft and the companion flange.

If it has the orginal 57 carrier, make sure you have the right seal before popping it out. At one time it was hard to find a seal for the 57 and they cost quite a bit more than later seals.

I have the drive shaft and the yoke out. it looks like the seal is under a plate on the front of the carrier cover. i am not sure what a companion flange is.

I was going to change the pinion seal and I found out I had the wrong seal. So I took a break. While on my break the boy put the flange for the u-joint on the rear end with the impact. Now the rear end will not turn. What did he do?

He probably collapsed the "crush sleeve" some more, making the bearings too tight. Only way to fix that is to replace the crush sleeve. Probably should remove the pinion carrier to do that. The "plate" you are seeing is actually the seal, it's about 4 inches OD. Companion flange, yoke, same thing.
