I have a 1958 ford custom 300 with a 292.
When I rev up my engine I get about a 6 inch in diameter puddle of oil.
Today I got underneath my car and cleaned the area it looked like it was coming from (around the oil pump). I reved it up to about 3000 rpm and the oil was dripping down the oil pump.
It looked like the oil was comming from the oil line fitting going into the pump from the pan.
Is there suppose to be a oring or seal in this fitting?

There is a rubber packing that goes over the tube and into the oil pump. Make sure the nut is tight. There is a gasket between the pump and the block. If that gasket is bad or the bolts are loose, it can leak. Three bolts hold the pump on. There is a gasket for the pressure bypass valve. This is the plug next to the tube from the pan. There is also an oil galley plug above the oil pump. You'll probably have difficulty finding this with the oil filter in place. If the valve cover is not sealing, it could be coming from there.

I don't know the history of your engine so I have to ask, was it recently assembled or had head work. Check to ensure the bolts at the rear of the heads was installed. One on each side, by the temp sending unit on one side and a small plug on the distributor side. They have been left out more than once. If not installed, install a Short bolt with sealant on the threads. Too long of a bolt will bend a push rod because it goes into the push rod passage through the head.

No work has been done to the heads recently. I think I am going to have to put my video camera under the car and rev It to see where it comes from. It isn't coming from the gasket behind the oil pump. It has to be coming from above the pump or from the fitting into the oil pump. The fitting was a little lose, I was able to get almost two complete turns and thought that would fix it but it didn't. It seems like I ran out of threads before it was tight enough to prevent it from leaking.

Without this seal you will have a leak. Chuck

If its leaking from the tube into the pump be careful as it may also suck air and the oil pressure will drop away. That jamb nut is not suposed to be too tight either, it should be quite obvious if its leaking from there. Suggestion if you need to get the rubber tube gasket for it buy the whole sump gasket kit from [ Felpro] through Mac's it costs about a $1.50 more and you get it in the kit anyway as well as all the other gaskets !!

I've seen it where the nut on the inlet to the pump was tightens so much that the tube was actually crushed. But I would think that would cause it to suck air more than leak. Still just another thing to check.
Also if it becomes unfindable (is that a word?) you could get one of those dye kits that you add to the oil and check with a black light to find the leak. Just my 1¢.

OK so i replaced the oil tube seal even though it needed it it did not fix the problem..... so i took the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqx6iwFOf9M is there a gasket there? oh by the way i i had to open a new user name because when i signed up the first time i must have mistyped in my email so i couldent log in....

Very difficult to see with the low lighting: But, it looks to me like it's spurting out from between the pump body, and the engine block; and, yes, there is a gasket there, if my "take" if correct. Regards, JLB

There is a gasket for the filter plate. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? What pressure is indicated?

You should be able to pick up a gasket at Napa or some other local parts store. It's easy to remove. Take the filter off, get a socket to fit the fitting in the center, preferably a 6 point. Look at the inside edge of the socket and you will see that it is beveled. The hex portion on the fitting is so thin that this bevel can allow the socket to slip off quite easily. If this happens, sand or grind the socket to remove the bevel and try it again.

Before you remove the adapter, install an oil gauge. You want to rule out some sort of blockage or other issue that may result in excess pressure and blow out the new gasket.

Do as Charlie said grind the surface back on your socket so its flat. Also when you are re-installing the new O ring use contact cement and lightly glue it to the plate then offer it up to the block clean... [Thanks again Rick for that tip!] I would be replacing your oil pump gaskets too..

Once you’ve removed the oil filter plate, insure that it’s not deformed. On a flat surface, the center hole should be slightly off of the surface so that tension can hold the plate tight against the gasket. Done.... Used a socket, hammer and big 4" pipe to "adjust" the filter plate, the rubber cement tip worked great. Leak gone! Thanks for the help.
