I have a 272 and a 292 that I could put in my 55 but I am leaning towards using the 272 since its a 55 to 57 block and would be correct according to the casting numbers,what I need to know is can the 272 block be safely cut to accept standard 292 pistons. Both motors I have will most likely need to be bored to clean up the cylinders and I could probably find a set of standard 272 pistons cheaper and have a original block which is really no big deal but since I have it it would be nice to use.

Jeff;

The short answer is YES. It's pretty common practice. 272 and 292 rods are the same length and the wrist pin locations are the same for 272 and 292 pistons.

Here is a link to John Mummerts technical info which should help you out,

I've heard somewhere that some early (?) 272 blocks may be thinn walled. In any case, to avoid ruining a block & wasting your money on the bore job, it's probably a good idea to sonic test the block first. Apparently Y-Blks were sometimes subject to unintended core shifts during casting, resulting in thin areas.

I talked to Mike Suter at Fall Carlisle,and he said he's turned a lot of 272's into 312's. Told me how his machinist was afraid to do it.

As others have brought up, ‘Yes’ is the short answer but there are nuances to watch for.  While I’ve found a couple of 272’s that will actually go to a 4.000” bore, the block castings are not consistent.  Here are just a few of the past threads on the subject.  Using the search function will bring up others.

Well it looks like I have posted about this before and totally forgot about it.
