The steering on my '54 Merc seems to bind near both ends of it's travel. The box is a new Lares 80502, and everything else in the linkage appears new also. It's like there was a dimple or wear spot in the roller or sector, but they look perfect. The binding happens near the end of the travel, but when past the binding spot more travel can occur smoothly. The idler arm and spring loaded pitman ball/sockets all look excellent. Thanks : Bruce

Still need help on this one. I now know for sure that the problem is in the box because with the linkage disconnected and a resistance applied to the pitman arm the binding still happens, I removed the sector and it appears O.K., but it seems to have too much travel. Does anyone know how many turns lock to lock the '54 Merc should have? Thamks : Bruce

What is a Lares 8052? I'm sure there are others here that don't know either..

Lares Corporation is a supplier of rebuilt steering boxes, pumps etc. They have a website.I enquired about a box for mine. They dont have one.Could redo mine if I send it in.Joblot.com has ALL the parts to rebuild mine including a repair kit for both the input shaft and a replacement roller assembly for the sector shaft.Check out their online catalog if anyone is looking for parts. If I could find an old time mechanic locally I could buy the parts and have it redone.
