Moz, I recently went through the frustration of trying to find a late model flex plate to allow conversion to an fmx in my star model ute. I eventually got one by scouring all the ads in all the Oz publications. Whilst I was looking, I found one that the sellers price was that he wanted my first born grand child. It was at Johns Rod and Custom, in Victoria. His price was $750. Needless to say I left it there but if you can stand the pain he may still have it.

thanks for thinking of me stuey thats the great thing about the forum.

rick i love my mainline but at $750 not that much lol, i had the guys next door to me at work dremmel the crack & slowly mig it on both sides then they linished it & you cant see where it was, it was sugessted to maybe weld a second plate on but with not much room in the bell housing in that area i went against it but i did put 2 coats of por 15 on each side which should have the same effect as a plate ive talked to bill about it & we both think it took 52 years to crack, it may last that long again by which time i wont be driving it.

Yeah I spoke with Bill when I was looking for a plate and he told me you welded yours.

I am also fitting an fmx to my my 55 and the plate I have for that is cracked and I can see no reason not to weld it though I think that a tig would be safer than mig.

Funnily my plate that is cracked is in overall better shape than a non cracked one that I sourced out of Queensland . It is hard to understand why these plates are prone to cracking as I would always have assumed that the load on the plate was axial and not of a thrust nature.

My 57 fordomatic also had a cracked Flex plate. (unknown till it was taken out) The trans shop had a time trying to find one. If I had still been at work & realized the delay, I'd also have welded it. Likely with small diameter Low Hy electrode.. Anyway they got a NOS one from somewhere in the East, with shipping and all it cost me well over $300.. A note on broken flex plates. While mine did not make noise, I've heard that sometimes they make a noise like an engine knock..

paul thats exactly what mine was doing & yes it sounds like a loud engine knock, mine was hard to diagnose because after a few minutes it would get warm the crack would close up & the noise would stop.

rick i agree the metal is to thick for it to be a flex plate added there's no room in there for it to flex, in the case of mine my engine was never built properly & was so stiff you could'nt turn it by hand i suspect that with the torque of the starter motor hitting it hard to get it to turn put massive amounts of pressure on the plate at the crank flange & caused the crack.

Hey Moz!  Is this what you were looking for?  Might want to get it even if your old one was fixed.
