Since I've had my car there has been a buzz in the drive train. The faster it goes the worse it is. I originally thought it was a U-joint but it has new u-joints since I changed transmissions. (The buzz was there before the tranny swap). I'm thinking, now, it's the pinion bearing but any pinion bearing issue I had back in the day they howled like crazy. This does not howl although there is a slight whine but not bad. The vibe is worse when I let off the gas than when there is power to it. I can play with the throttle slightly and increase or decrease the vibe. I am having it looked at next month. Not long after I got the car I checked the fluid level in the rear end & it was nearly dry.... NAPA carries a pinion bearing, crush washer & seal but to get carrier bearings one has to get the entire overhaul kit....

Without actually hearing the sound, by your description I would say it's driveshaft related, like out of balance. Other possibilities would be exhaust pipe touching the frame, tire(s) with flat spots in the tread from being run out of balance,or even tire balance.

You might check the rear transmission bushing. Up and down play in the yoke at the transmission can create some driveline vibration issues.

Yeah John I was thinking driveshaft too but basically talked myself out of it. The noise is like a whine, like a bearing but not as loud (yet). There's a place in Dothan that balances driveshafts but they are high as hell. I'd rather it be a pinion bearing and that dry rear end sort of led me to think pinion bearing + it leaks a little out of the pinion seal.
Doesn't have a torque converter.
Ted, this is a different transmission and it did it with the other one too. It's not a tire like buzz or vibe. Exhaust is ok not rattling against the frame.
But I'm also the guy that chased a vapor lock for 3 years & it turned out to be the coil.....

My 62 wagon does the exact same thing. As a matter of fact, as I was reading your post and was thinking that maybe I had posted this a long time ago and forgot. I kept looking at your id to see if it was mine. My car has a 292 with a Fordomatic transmission. Your description of the problem is identical to mine in every way. I thought it was my rear wheel bearings, so I replaced them. When I removed them, they looked bad, so I thought I had solved the problem, but the problem was still there. If you find out what the problem is, please post it. The noise is very annoying at speeds above 55 mph and I don't feel confident driving the car on the highway.

I had my driveshaft balanced for $55 and now it's a lot better. I can cruise @ 70 mph now with no shake or noise....

Bird Haven lists them seperately and probably for less then CRAPA. they are in Iowa at 1-866-302-3673 and their catalog Y-12 has nice illustrations along with part numbers.
