I enjoyed the post by the guy who claims to have beat everyone with his 265 chevy. Where was that, Fantasyland Speedway?

Well, you just have to pick your races carefully.

I feel like joining that forum and telling the guy with the 265 that beat everyone I doubt it would have came close to the 59 371 Olds powered 53 Olds I had, guys with 350s got beat by a couple car lengths.

As much as I hate to say it I had a friend with a 56 scrub 235 2bbl column stick that was a terror! No one ever figured out why he was so quick but he embarrased a lot of cars that should have wiped him up. He was a sort of a geek and not a car nut. Just had a fast 56. That said, his was the only one that could stay with my 57, trip deuce, 312 ragtop. There is no correcting these fools on what they think happend or they heard about. They usually were noplace near a track or, god forbid, street race. Tell them to get their tri 5 scrub, add to it compatible equipment and meet us at the track. Or in old guy talk, Put up or Shut up! I wanted to add, the fastest basic stock 55 Ford I remember was a friends 2dr sedan. Said to have been a police car from California. Had a wicked lope at idle. At least thats what it sounded like to 16-17 year olds. If a scrub even looked like he was going to run him down he would kick it out of overdrive and go for broke. It never broke! One day we were at his house and an older (19?) guy that worked at a garage (probably pumped gas but to us he was a Mechanic) was doing a tune up. He was going to set the valve lash and when he pulled the covers off found a missing push rod in one hole and a bent one in the next! As you might have guessed fixing that took the lope out of the idle. I don't think he ever had to kick it out of idle again to win a street race. That darn thing was wicked! I wish I had known enough about engines at that time to really see what was in it. But of course I would have forgotten most of it by now. As Jerry C says "thats my story and I'm stickin to it". Ted, i can't post on this site, don't feel like joining. Ask Oldhead to bring one of those big bad 265's or even a 270/283 to Columbus. I'll show up with my street tires and we can see if he can ah "Blow me away". I kinda doubt it.

I believe you too Pegleg. I put my two cents worth in because I've owned them all as well including a 55 chevy belair 2dr ht with the classic small block V8 and no real power.

Gary,
My parents had a 55 Nomad with the power pack (4 bbl, duals) it was ever bit an 18 second car. Kids I knew later with shoebox Scrubs thought they all had 12 second cars. I had two buddies with dual quad '56 fords, either of those Fords never lost against those cars. Maybe they would have against a pro built 301 with headers and quads, and 5:13's, but I'd have to see it to believe it. My '57 Pontiac 347 stick two barrel would hold off most of the SBC's easily, and i'll guarantee the red 57 would have eaten all of them alive.

Frank, I added my 2 cents worth to that article and quoted your car as well, I think I was pretty much on the money or at least hope I was.

Gary, that was about right. It was 372, But the fuel pump couldn't keep up with it, Went way lean when the carb bowl went dry. Much better with gas in the carb! The pure stock folks figured it was 342 at the rear wheels. F code type cam, unported 471, and iron B intake, 57 up exhaust manifolds and mufflers. Can't understand why NHRA factored them!!

The first few decent passes I got with my 56 it shut down in second gear like a switch had been turned off. I'm running the same fuel pump as the 427 hipo but even with the supercharger referenced to it it wouldn't keep up. I added an inline electric pump at the tank and a switch on the dash to turn it on. The only time I need it is if I make a hard pull from 1st through 2d gear. With the pump on no problem. So I know what you mean about empty bowls. Chuck (Yeah I know its just one of my many problems, but I'm working on them)

I am only too familiar with the fuel supply problems with the Y-Block. When I first put the E carb setup on my '57 Bird back in '66, it just ran out of gas at the end of second gear. Added a cheap electric pump near the gas tank and never had a problem since until the pump died. Think I have a holley on it now and still runing through the stock pump.
