I have put over 13,000 miles on my 56 victoria with fordomatic and the collumn shifter has always moved easily through the PRNDL range back and forth with no trouble until lately. On start up , it goes easily enough from park to D or R, but now when I want to park the car, it won't go from R to P unless i Pull back extra hard on the shifter and push extra hard to the left. It ends up going into park, but I can tell I am forcing it. It feels like maybe something chipped or broke off in the collumn . Anyone else ever had and corrected this problem?

First I would try and determine if the problem is in the column or the transmission. If you disconnect the column from the transmission can you move the lever on the side of the transmission into park without excessive force? At the same time as its disconnected can you shift the column into park or does it hang up?Start there and see what you find.

Thank you old car mark. Sometimes you can't see the forest because of the trees. Your advice is a good simple way to pinpoint the damage. HOWEVER, since I recieved your advice, the shifter on my last two errands has suddenly decided to go back into park as smooth as butter, this after it had been giving me trouble for several weeks. I'm sure there is still a problem and I will now need to wait for it to act up again for me to use your advice to check it. I have an extra steering collumn on stand by. Sure hope I don't need to open up the transmission. Since the rebuild I had to pull the moter and trans out together in order to change the speedometer gear which was cut in the opposite direction and was making my speedometer run backwards. I found that the victoria models just don't have quite enough clearence to let a guy unbolt just the tailshaft housing, slide it off an gain access to the speedo gear. Wonder why they ever made two identical speedometer gears with one being cut in the opposite direction. Sure caused me a lot of grief. geo55

How long ago did you change the speedo gear? Did the problems start after that? I would look closely at engine and trans mounts, esp since its intermittent. Loose or worn mounts can cause the linkage to bind, esp whenever the motor torques/settles from driving.
Just a thought.

Your suggestion makes a lot of sense but the problem didn't arise until about 10,000 miles after I changed the speedometer gear. Next time it binds, I will disconnect linkage and check adjustment. Thanks
