I need to replace my 1957 steering box as it has a flat spot in it. The existing box is Casting # AJ-3550-C on the main case. Does anyone have the casting # (preferred) or part # for a 58 box, as I'm looking for one. I've been told the 58 box is an improved design, but should bolt right in. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

You can go to the local salvage yard and find a steering box from a late 60's Cougar. The Cougar is much preferred over the Mustang box as they all had power steering and so the box never got much of a workout. I have one on my 56 Fairlane (Saginaw 3550a) and the only difference from factory that I have found is that you will have to drill one hole in the frame for a bolt. Two of the three bolt holes are a perfect match. Hope this gives you some options. Also, the Cougar ones are a few years newer. Another big plus is that the Cougar box cost me $75.00 from the local salvage yard. Check the prices of the 3550 in Summit from "Flaming River". $400+ and it doesn't take long to find the salvage yard

Jim, was the column the right length, how about the steering wheel, was there an adaptor needed? Gerry

Jim: Thanks for the info.. however your car is a 55-56 chassis. Mine is a 57, I don't think the steering box assemblies interchange ? Do they ?

These boxes require cutting your steering shaft and putting in a universal joint. Chuck

Jim: Since you have both a 54 and 56, is the 54 box the same as the 56 and do they mount the same? Thanks

Tom: Thanks but I'm told that the steering column shaft on a 59 is longer (?) This thread has digressed somewhat, so I still have my questions...

Tom: Thanks for looking that up. It covers most of my questions. I think I got info on the horn mod somewhere before, but had forgotten. My memory has never been great, & as I've recently turned 65, it isn't getting any better.....
