After spending time setting (and resetting) the points on my 292, I am considering a Pertronix installation. Can I use 7mm plug wires w/the conversion. I currently have Accel 8mm, but don't like the look or routing. I can go back to the factory plug wire looms w/the 7mm wires if they can handle the job. I also just replaced the coil w/a new unit. Will it hold up to a Pertronix system? Thanks to all, James Q, Ruston, LA

There's not enough info to answer your questions so the answers are maybe and maybe. You'll need to decide which Pertronix you want and then determine if those parts will work with it. Consult the experts on Pertronix ignition, http://www.pertronix.com/
I get the impression that you're having issues with your points adjustment. When the distributor is in good shape, the points are pretty darn reliable and don't require a lot of adjustment. If there is some problem with your distributor, an electronic conversion will not fix it. It may mask the problem but if the distributor is terribly worn, it simply needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Figure out what your problem is before forking out the dough for an "upgrade" that may not even fix the problem.

You might want to check the vertical freeplay in the shaft. There is a maximum spec which I believe is .035.I got a rebuilt that had almost .100.More than double the maximum spec. The timing would change as the shaft rode up and down.Bought a shim kit from Mr.Gasket I believe.Got the freeplay down to specs and it worked fine.

Thanks for the responses. The issue is difficulty in getting the points gap set correctly because of my ham-handed mechanical skills. I replaced the points (rotor, condenser, cap) because I have owned the car for 3 1/2 yrs and thought it would be a prudent thing. Being a mid-60's Pontiac convert, where you set points externally w/an allen wrench, I find the Ford set -up difficult to accomplish succesfully! The car runs well. The Accel wires make it impossible to remove the dist cap w/out removing the plug wires, so it is time consuming to go under the cap and reset the points. This is the rationale for considering the Pertronix conversion. Basically, this is a laziness issue on my part! Thanks for your patience, James Q

I have the Pertronix in mine.At least go with the Pertronix 2.If you accidently leave the key on in the "run" position at least it wont burn out like the original Pertronix did.You should also carry the original points-condensor as spare parts when you go somewhere. If the Pertronix quits at least you can fall back on the point setup to get you home.

I have the 8mm wires also, and I found the points replacement to be a pain in the butt. Mostly because the distributor location on the y puts it right at the pinch seam on this car. I'm interested in going to the pertronix, or I saw some threads on the Ford barn about using the dura spark parts on the y distributor. Please keep us posted as to what you go with.
