Need a socket to remove oil filter adaptor. What did you use?

I am trying to clean a Ford block with the spin on oil filter. The nut holding the adaptor to the block is very thin, like 5/16 inch. All my sockets that are big enough are also champhered on the open end and won`t grip the nut enough to loosen it. Any good ideas would be welcome. Thanks Pete

I was careful and used a pair of water pump (channel lock) pliers and it came right off...

If you have a belt sander or similar device get a socket and grind it down until the chamfer is gone.

Good call on grinding the socket to remove the champher. A couple of minutes on the grinder and it fit tight. I still needed a BIG air impact wrench but it did come off OK. Thanks Pete

Not sure it needs to be that tight when you re install that fitting. I wounder if someone could give some torque spec?  Gerry

My original 61 repair manual says 20 - 25 footpounds for the oil filter adapter on a 302 and 332 and 20 - 25 for the oil filter center bolt on all engines.  I probably did 22 ft/lbs or so.

The late Walt Knuckles (T-bird guru) suggested 60 ft. lbs., but only after the adapter plate had been pounded out and measured to insure it is not sprung. Also, I use the extra-thick gasket from "Prestige" (installed dry).



Many who start up fresh motors with a lot of oil presure find the above good advice. I think the instructions/photos for altering the adapter are available on-line (CTCC, etc.).
