Engine splash pans

My 55 had some splash pans and was wondering if they are necessary,I took them off when I rebuilt the front suspension and they never got back on and have been laying under the bench in the garage for about 10 years so its time to do something with them. I am cleaning them up to paint and will put them back on but curious if they did ant good except for catching bolts and tools that were dropped,if the pans do not go back on they will get bent up or lost plus its a little project to get me out of the house.

They do stop water from splashing up on the engine, but they also act as a air baffel to help cooling.

What do they look like? Any photos? The reason I ask is that my '56 doesn't have any and the car is pretty much all original.

They fit under the front end between the radiator mount and the front of the engine. When they are installed you cant see the ground by looking down past the fan. They were usually removed during some work and never put back. It's not often you see them on a car. Kind of like the upper radiator shield. Chuck

I had to take the upper radiator shield off since I set the radiator forward using 6 cylinder brackets to give me a little more room for the fan when I put the 351 in,I still have it and will go on when the 292 goes in. I will post some pics of the pans after I get them painted.

OK that's still there. I was thinking it was something much larger.

They have been painted and ready to install,the next time the 55 is in the big garage they will be installed.

I am wondering if the pans will make it harder to get the oil filter off from the bottom since it still has a 351.
