While I build another engine I have decided to change the cam in my car. I realize that the lifters need to be changed when another cam is installed. Can this be done without pulling the pan? Thanks G.S.

The Ford shop manual shows this being done with wooden clothespins That have been cut to fit under the wide lifter lip. Rotate the cam and raise each lifter and then hold it up further with the pins. Remove and replace the cam. Reface or replace the lifters. This does require pan removal.Pete

Replacing the lifters with the engine in the car is a tedious, time consuming operation. Ford dealers used to have a tool kit to do this. I borrowed the kit years ago and changed lifters. I find that it is much easire to pull the engine, turn it upside down, remove the pan, and replace the lifters. Of course the rocker arms and pushrods have to be removed, as well as the tiiming cover.

That's what I remember on the lifter replacement. For now I will use the lifters in the motor. I will see how worn the current cam is. Hopefully the lifters are in good shape. Thanks G.S.

I wouldn't change the cam and not the lifters.

Here’s the link to a past thread showing the tool used to change out the lifters with the engine in the chassis. As John mentions, it is tedious but doable.

And as far as using used lifters, here’s the link to a past thread that gives some information and more links to past threads.
