I did a search and didn't find an answer. I bought a kitfor my '56 and with the "top" on top the slot hole is at the 4 to 5:00 angle. I thought I read somewhere on the site to have the slot on top. By looking at the angle it looks as if the 4-5:00 angle will makte so there is not as much of a mess when changing it out. Shoul I put it at the top to keep it full for start up?

I remember a the service station I worked at in the 60's the guys would punch a whole in the bottom of the spin on filter with an ice pick and let it drain while they lubed the zerks.

Did you get it from Mac's? I got one of theirs and had the same question. I think the "TOP" means to the outside. Yes, the hole should be in the 12 o clock position.
