Who makes a good quality spark plug set at a good price for the Y blocks?

I don't know who their manufacturer is, but the last set that I purchased at Mac's was pretty good. I believe I got the set that had the original appearance from the factory, but an updated core. They are in a 55 driver, not a show car.

I've purchased a couple of sets from Concourse parts and they have worked well. The first set came with a great set of measurements so you can make up the wire looms on the bench, using all the factory brackets. Everything fit well. The second set of wires didn't come with the measurement sheet but fortunately I had saved the sheet from the first set.The point here is if the set you receive doesn't come with these instructions, let me know and I will get you a copy, as it would be real time consuming to assemble without it

If someone could post the wire measurements I'm sure it would help someone out. I bought the replacement wires from Mac's and they came without any sheet. I measured the old wires that were not the same length as the replacements. The old wires were pretty nasty so they were not any fun to measure. I'm sure I could have asked here but I didn't want to wait. I know I would save the measurements if somebody posted them for next time. Mark

Darrell, if you are looking for concours correct wires, the above suggestions are good. If you are looking for functionality and value for the money, I would recommend Belden wire sets from NAPA. Over the years, I have used them on a broad range of applications with excellent results. They may not be "correct" appearing if that is a consideration though.

I second that! Jeff, is there any way you can post the instructions? Thanks!

Im not fussy about how correct they are for the original look, I just want something that works good and good price. Appreciate all the feed back. Supercharged, how do I get ahold of you for a copy of the lengths? That would be awesome!

As I recall, the set I purchased from Mac's had all of the wires labeled so the measuring was a no brainer. Simply place the numbered wire with the corresponding cylinder's plug and the other end to the corresponding cap position. Maybe Mac's has changed their wires over the past 3 or 4 years?

Do you guys prefer solid core or carbon core?? Bruce

Daniel, Mac's still have the "correct" wires like that but they are a lot more money than the replacement wires they sell. the reproduction wire are 77.95 and the motorcraft replacement are 37.95. I would rather burn another $40 in gas going for a ride (my car is not a trailer queen) Mark

Sadly $40 doesn't get you very far any more.

I don't remember my set costing that much, but they were very nice and excellent quality for a car driven on the road. They were carbon core too. Maybe I should look back over my receipts and items from a few years back. I think that was around 5 years ago or so. Anyhow, what Mac's had at that time not only installed easily and looked good, but was excellent performance quality wires.

Sorry for the delayed response, I'll see if I can scan the instructions and post. It would very difficult to install the wires, using the factory wire brackets and holders without these. The wires are also numbered so that correct plug is connected to the correct position on the cap. The directions give you lengths for each wire as they pass through the brackets.

My scanner isn't cooperating. If somebody would like these send me fax number and I'll be happy to fax them. Also if somebody has scanning capability perhaps they could assist with getting these out there.

BWD (Borg/Warner Direct) make an excellant set for both Quality and fit and at an extremely reasonable price. Available at most Parts stores, I use them even though they are not Concoures Correct because they cannot be beat at any price and are some of the least expensive around.

Let me take a look at the diagram and see if I can figure something out.

Klaus,
Hopefully Jeff will pick up on this and let me know if Im reading the diagram correctly. The instructions talk about two measurements. One measurement is to the first clamp comming from the distributer. The second measurement is to the second clamp. I see no measurements which would give the total length of the wires from the distributer cap to the spark plugs. It sounds like each wire has a label on it which is removed after installation (1-8). I am guessing the wires this diagram refer to are pre cut to the proper length. If I am reading it correctly, it just tells you where to make the measurements to install the wires in the block mounts. Hopefully if Jeff sees something else, he will help us out.

All four clamps are 4 wire.

I checked the diagram Charlie. If I would have been paying attention I would have realized all eight wires wires have two clamp measurements, which confirms all clamps are in deed four wire clamps. Thanks for pointing that out. When they talk about "conduit" on the wires between the clamps and from the last clamp to the spark plug, is this for the Tunderbird only or all original Y Blocks? The diagram shows no conduit from the distributer to the first clamp.

The instructions came with a pre-made set of wires for my '56 Vic. So I didn't need to worry about the overall length of each wire. I don't know if the conduits (a plastic sleeve that is to go over certain portions of the wire are Thunderbird only or for all Y's). I also left the individual wire numbers on the wires for future reference.
