The rear end needs work or replacement. The rear has a lot of play and leaks at the housing and also at the axle flanges. It's a 292 stick. I want to fix the problem before it gets worse. What size should the factory rear end be? Please reply to post or call Thanks. Bill 928 855 7340

57 and later 9" rears will fit but you will have to check the width. Any 9" that fits under a Mustang will also work. If your not driving it hard some of the 8" rears will work and have disk brakes. Check out this site on the 9":

should be somewhere around 3:56 gears for a staright stick but possibly 3:31's. '57, 58, 59 Ford and '59 EDSEL are the narrow 9" that would be the same width as well as '57, '58, '59, & '60 Thunderbird except that the '57 Thunderbird has a sharper pitch on the mounting pads due to the short drove shaft of the '57 Bird. Another thought is that '55 & '56 Thunderbirds, Ford Station Wagons and '56 & '56 Mercury Station Wagons used the DANA 44 which is stronger then the pass car rear.

According to the Shop manual, the stock rear for a stick 292 was 3.78. You should be able to get seals, etc for the rear you now have. You might want to consider getting another 56 rear and either have that rebuilt or put it into your car now (temporarily) and have your rear rebuilt.
57 to 59 rears were the same overall length as the 56. 57 and 58 are direct boltins, but the 59 may have a wider distance between spring pads (not sure). 65 and 66 Mustangs are the same length and the mounting pads are ok. 67 and up Mustangs went with a wider rear. 57-59 are 9 inch, the Mustang 8 inch. 75-80 Granadas are a little wider and you could have problems stuffing tires under the car.
V8 Mavericks are a little bit shorter than stock, but nowadays their as rare as 65/66 9 inch mustangs.

Don't forget the early Bronco rears they are narrow 9". Not that hard to find a posi if you can find the rear end. The only drawback is the usually have a 5 on 5" bolt pattern. You could use rear wheels with the right bolt pattern (lots of Ford pickups), redrill the axle (not real easy or always safe) or replace the axles with some from Speedway or a similar shop. Chuck

1949 thru 1956 car are the same housing, center section from 49 thru 55 will bolt in, but you have to use the 49/59 axles or change over the 56 spider gears into the 49/55 unit.

Also, your '56 driveswhaft is not a direct bolt-up to the later rear ends, so a special U joint is needed to make the connection, or else the driveshaft has to be modified.

Not trying to hijack you guys, I have a question about the rear end yoke, will an 8in yoke fit the original 56 rear end? Any help is appreciated.
