I recently purchased a 55 merc with a stock auto trans. I thought the tailpiece was leaking but it turns out to be the shift selector input. Can this gasket (o-ring?) be replace with the tranny in the car?

y blockhead is correct, drop pan and valve body, to remove retaining nut on shaft to remove it from case to access seals. Allways have correct fluid level in box as overfull while parked up will encourage leaking from selector seals. Aussie bill.

The above suggestions are valid. In T-Birds you have to take out the 4 bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing and unhook the rear mount so you can rotate the trans enough to pull the shift lever out of the case. And, you stand a good chance of losing your religion trying to get the detent spring and ball to stay in their hole while putting the detent (often called "rooster comb") back in place. It's aggravating enough when the trans is upside down. John

I agree with John, this is a tough job, not complicated, just tough with the trans in the car. I have done it when I worked at the dealerships, but I think now that I would just drop the trans out so I could see what I was doing. The eyes and fingers don't work like they once did.

g'day guys johns right the same has to be done with the detent ball & spring & detent on the passenger cars it can be done just a little tricky as glen said mine leaks but i find if its about 1/4 litre from full it doesnt leak doesnt affect the tranny working either

guys the manual says you must use a tube to hold the detent ball & spring in while rotating the detent during reasembly from the diagram i would think an old push rod would be ideal
