I am somewhat confused by an engine on Ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/251250363173?item=251250363173&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr
The engine has the raised aspirin sized dot on the crank flange. Mummert's web site, "How to identify a 312" - says that "not all 312 cranks have this aspirin size raised dot". I thought this meant that if the dot was present , the engine was a 312. However it could still be a 312, even if the dot was missing. It also says that a 312 has ECZ main caps and that all others are EBU. The engine on ebay has the raised dot but it has EBU main caps, which to me seems contradictory. Mummert also says that he caps are "the only positive way to identify a 312". So, my question is, do engines other than 312s have the aspirin sized raised dot on the crank flange?

This appears to be a 292 block with a 312 crank, this could have been accomplished in 1 of 2 ways. Either the 312 mains have been turned down to 292 std size (most likely) or the block has been aligned bored to 312 main size. There are a lot of good parts there and looks like it would be a good start for someone.

Hi - I received this email from the seller on ebay responding to my comment that the crank appeared to be a 312.
"Yes. Your correct..However the 312 and a 292 blocks are of the same cast. Different operations after the casting separate the two. . The C1AE block is a 292 Heavy duty truck block with EBU Main Caps on a 312 crank"
Interesting. I guess there is no end to the variations.

If it's a 312 crank, then the pistons are custom since C2 rods were used. I don't believe there is a Y piston that would work with that stroke and rod length combo. One picture of the crank has 2.4984 painted on it, which is 292. So if it is a 312 crank, the mains have been turned, which explains the ebu caps.
I don't think it's stock by any stretch but it does look like it might have some good stuff.

Does look like a good Y for someone if the price and location comes out right. To far for me to make it work out.

I may need to read the ad again, but I thought he said the pistons were missing, absent, not included, or something like that, and that the entire motor was more a loose mock-up while the previous owner figured out what he was a building.

The partial set of roller rockers looks weird. This may be a great deal if the reserve is right but I think I'd like to have a Y-Blocks member that lives nearby check it out. Chuck

In the picture of the close up of the crank journal there doesn't seem to be much of a radius on the sides?? Or is it just these old eyes... Also, appears he was going to run Dove rockers on the intakes only?

What ever it is, its defiantly worth some good bucks. Most of the work looks A+. \ I installed Dove Rockers in my 312 and had a little issue with the spacers. Perhaps that is what is going on here. Really a nice motor to get your arms around.

Glen, Charlie, NOOB, and The Master Cylinder have called this one, IMO. Per J.M.'s web site, the engine block is '61 FoMoCo 292 car or truck. The crank 'dot' would appear to make it a 312. The C2AE rods are the 'improved' '62-'64 FoMoCo 292 design. The radius shown on the one crank throw doesn't look like anything I'm used to seeing.
No FoMoCo OEM piston, replacement piston, or usually-available aftermarket custom piston will work with the 312 crank standard stroke paired with a FoMoCo OEM 292 center-to-center length connecting rod.
Custom spec'd pistons would have to be ordered to get the correct piston pin location / compression height if the pictured connecting rods are retained for the engine assembly process.
Interesting parts, but as Alan said, too far away for me to even think about. Someone will likely buy it for the timing set, 113 heads, engine block, and dual quad set-up.
