Hi, Newbie here. I'm getting a 57 ford fairlane 500 4 dr. all original with a 312 engine. The car needs nothing and is in great condition.

I also joined fords forever and had asked if there was something back in 57 that made the motor more horse power and I really wanted to keep things stock. They mentioned that there was a factory supercharger back then. Doe's anyone know what and where I would fined everything I would need to possibly do this?

It's kind of funny, but I just sold a 66 Shelby Cobra and now buying a 57 ford 4dr. I must be getting old....Wink

Thanks for the help.

Take a look at this site:

http://mcpax.com/index.htm

Specificaly look at the VR-57's they were used on the 57's. Several members here run them so you should be able to find all the informaiton you could need. Chuck

Bob:

The '57 312 was factory rated at 245 HP, the '56 was 225HP. The differences are better heads with bigger intake valves, better camshaft, different intake with the late style Holley carb, better distributor, bigger exhaust manifolds. The same engine with 2-4 barrels made 270 HP.

The supercharged engine was under rated at 300 HP. Parts that are different from the 245 HP are: cylinder heads, intake manifold, carb, distributor, camshaft, valve springs, pushrods, crankshaft damper/pulley, fuel pump and fuel filter. I probably left out something. Also unique are the supercharger, mounting bracket, belt drive components, inlet and pressure hoses, carb, carb bonnet, and air filter. With maybe less than 1800 cars and T-Birds so equipped, most of which were circle trackers, the parts are very, very rare. A pair of heads recently sold for about $4000 (though there are truck heads that make a satisfactory substitute), a bracket recently was advertised on this site for $400 and quickly got a response. I figure it sold at that bargain price. I have seen fuel pumps advertised in the $100 range for used ones. Used blowers are in the $1500 range, most need rebuilt, and original VR parts have been out of production since about '75. I'm not trying to scare you off, but your parts search will be extensive and expensive. Maybe you got enough out of your Shelby to finance this project. The easiest way to get all the parts is to buy a car so equipped, restored ones are approaching 6 figures, maybe more.

Hi bob

If it were me i would forget about the supercharger. I would take that money and upgrade the car. Swap out the trans for a modern one. Change to disc brakes. Change the steering. I then would take the rest of the money and bolt on the power instead of supercharging.

Its my opinion that you can not run a supercharger on a street driven car that has a carburetor. The only way to reliably do this is to convert to a electronic fuel injection system with electronic ignition control (to control spark advance).

Since your car will not be original with a supercharger anyway, why not try to assemble a period looking setup with newer, more common, and cheaper centrifugal parts? F-code people would know that it is in no way stock but those less informed would never know the difference if you do it right. If you have fab skills, you can even make stuff to resemble the originals.

I've done both VS and VR blower installations on Y blocks, one using Rebop parts and one pretty much custom fabricated. If you want to look into it, send me a PM. You might also look at (I think) Rono's post of his engine going together, and there's others here. If you're interested in pictures and details, send me a pm. Posting here is still a learning curve for me. It's going to cost less than that Cobra.

Glad I found that out, I'll take the license plate off my F code at once. John, take the vr off the Rancho!
By Hoosier Hurricane - 12 Years Ago
Well Frank, at least you didn't tell me to take the plates or blower off my T-Bird. But, I don't drive it every day.

All that work to put that dual quad supercharged L. Y.B. in my Ranchero and Frank says I can't drive it! Well he is older and wiser!

Ok guys what did I miss? Take your plates off? Have pity on the old and infirm and explain. Chuck

OH! I see I guess I missed that part. I'll get started on a new naturally asperated motor right away. I should have know all these years that I couldn't drive my Vicky on the street. Got to stay on top of these things. Chuck

Bob, as John said reproducing an F code is not easy, or cheap. But the rewards are worth it if you want to surprise the late model in the next lane. I still reproduce parts to make that conversion possible. There are several of us still trying to make it work! Hoosier Hurricane being the chief instigator in the deal. We all built up the parts and knowledge over a period of time (to spread out the economic pain). I started reproducing parts because the genuine stuff was so pricey that people (except John) were afraid to use the parts or cars in anger. We have several more F code replicas being built now and if you're interested, come to Columbus Ohio over Labor day, I can promise good food, good racing, (bench and real), and some of the most interesting old timer's you're likely to find anywhere. By the time you leave there you won't miss the Cobra one iota!

Emphasis on the older part?

Eh Charlie, You talkin to me? Just because I can't seem to keep an engine together for an entire year is not the blowers fault. I'm still trying to figure it out. Could it be the driver? Naw thats not it must be scrub lover sabotage. Chuck
By pegleg - 12 Years Ago
Chuckie, I'll bet the engine from Texas will stay together...........assuming you remember to fill it with oil!Tongue

I'm betting on that too. Can't wait to make a pass in my "wizard" motor! Chuck

Thanks for the invite Frank.... And I gotta say you guy's must be a lotta fun. With all the joking going on ( I think ?) Coming down to Ohio may just be a fun trip.....I'll let you know.

You should plan on it. Columbus is a really great gathering of Y's guys from all over and all walks of life. The engine provides the common interest point. You can find an answer for almost any Y related question you have in this walking brain trust. Not to mention the just plain fun part. We have fixin, racin, and showin going on all over the place. Not to mention food. Bring the family! Chuck

You guys are right, its not my car and its not my money so what do i care. The next time a "Newbie" writes in wanting to know if he should spend thousands of dollars supercharging his car ill say "Hell Yeah".

Ill stand by what i wrote. Running a supercharger with a carb and distributor is a difficult balancing act. This balancing act limits the amount of boost you can run making it not worth the money for most people.

Hi Guy's

I regret to inform you all that I didn't get the car. I had a deal going from a guy out in cal. Dave Littlefield was his name and he owns a door company in Hesperia Cal. We spent 2 weeks on the phone and numerous emails putting a deal together after he called and wanted to purchase my 66 Shelby Cobra replica. He offered a partial trade of a real nice 57 Ford Fairlane 500 4dr. He sent photo's and It looked real nice. In talking to my wife about it she thought it might be kinda fun to drive around this summer and it would be good for me because I just had a M. S. relapes and thats why we were selling the Cobra in the first place because I can no longer feel the clutch with my legs not working very well. We even joined this site to get a education about the car and it's workings. Anyway... I spent hours on the phone talking to shippers and even had a guy offer to drive and use my trailer to go all the way out there, drop off and pick up the cobra/fairlane. Mr. Littlefield said he found a company to do the hailing and would set it up. and asked me to send a copy of the title so he could have his AAA run it through dmv out there so he could make sure everthing was ok with his insurer. No problem I fax a copy out to him and everything was ok. So Now I asked him what the shipping date was and how he would like to do the moneys ect, ect,. Now I don't hear anything over the weekend and he emails me monday and tells me sorry i'm going to buy a car from a south afican company that builds cobras and thanks anyway. That was it, my wife and I were just dumbfounded that someone would do something like that. We are just sick about it. Lesson learned I guess. Boy, I was really looking forward to that 57..........Sad

Thanks for listening guy's and I'll visit this site once in awhile just to see what's going on.

Damn Californians... That really SUX. But don't give up!! That must not have been the car for you and your wife. You'll find the right match. maybe even a real "F Code".Smooooth Good Luck to ya.

If you have a picture of his 57 I would have the local police run his plate and find out if it's really his car. Sounds like he was more interested in you cobra title, maybe for a stolen cobra he has?
By piperj3 - 12 Years Ago
Hi lou,

His plate number is California # GHH418. Sure hope that's not the case. I'll try to attach photos.

Thank You
By pegleg - 12 Years Ago
Bob, Keep after it, you'll find another '57 and a buyer for the Cobra. Still be fun to come to Columbus, although we do not guarantee it'll be good for your diet!
By MoonShadow - 12 Years Ago
I can understand your disappointment that was a nice looking 57. But for some reason it just wasn't meant to be. There is a 57 waiting for you somewhere. The guys and gals on this forum is a good place to start another search. Also your local Craigslist or EBAY. Just be cautious.

The Columbus meet is run by NMRA (National Mustang Racing Association) so if all else fails you could bring the Cobra for the show and shine and possibly find some buyers. Check out the links page on this forum there are a lot of Y's guys with shops out there. For your area check out John Mummert in El Cajon, http://www.ford-y-block.com/ . He is your local Guru! Chuck

Thanks Chuck, I'm not sure there's a el cajon in wisconsin.

But thanks anyway.

I somehow got the impression that you were in California. Nothing new for me. So Wisconsin now you have no excuse not to come to Columbus! Love to see the car. Chuck

Its labor day weekend at National Trails Raceway east of Columbus. http://www.nationaltrailraceway.com/

Wow! People getting Y block Fever who have never even owned one yet, this disease is getting bad!
By MoonShadow - 12 Years Ago
This is not a disease Bill, its a new awakening! Chuck

Gee I just had a thought, how about a replica Cobra with one of Ted 500hp Y-blocks in it. Now that would be fast.
By Y block Billy - 12 Years Ago
I was thinking along the same lines Chuck, I wonder if Bob would like a nice 62 Galaxie XL? I could then make that Y Block Cobra happen!
By piperj3 - 12 Years Ago
What's the 62 Galaxie XL have for a motor ? I have no Idea what they came with. And I think you guy's are right about the Y-block fever. Because of you guy's I keep looking at all the Fords of that era......LOL BigGrin
By MoonShadow - 12 Years Ago
Just tongue in cheek about a Y in your Cobra BUT if you had an old vette that would be perfect. Nobody wants those old scrubs (gm) anyway. Chuck
