Installing Crankshaft Damper

56 Passenger car.Does anyone have any suggestions on installing the damper with the engine in the car?I know they are a tight fit going back on.Looking for ideas on replacing one.

See if you can find a long bolt that will fit in the crankshaft. Use the bolt and a washer to pull the damper in far enough to get the standard bolt in it. Chuck

If using the long bolt idea that Chuck suggested doesn't work, you may have to remove the radiator so you have the room to work and use the installation tool they sell at almost any parts store. They are not that expensive and do make the job alot easier.

Rono's approach is spot on. I just had to go through this exercise due to the outer ring slipping on the dampener. The removal and installation tool is not very expensive and are available at most auto part stores. And you do have to remove the radiator to provide adequate working room.

I recommend using the installation tool most auto parts stores carry. I am glad I did. Mine was a pretty tight fit. Its MUCH better to use the installation tool because then you are not putting rotational stress on the threads going into the crank snout. The installation tool stays fully threaded into the crank, while a much larger nut and bearing press the damper on instead. I fear if I hadn't use the tool, and had just used tried to crank it onto the snout using the bolt threads, I might've stripped the crank end. It was that tight. With the tool however, it went right on without a hitch. Just had to muscle up a bit towards the end.
