Hi,

I am pulling the transmission and torque converter out of my '56 wagon. The car has been sitting for many years. I don't know how sound they are but I do know when I start the car, they leak like mad. I haven't driven the car yet.

I know the tranny needs attention so I am going to take it to a shop. Anyone know of a good tranny repair shop in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area?

Thanks,

Actually, there may be a '55 tranny in the car. The engine decodes to a '55 272. I'm not sure what transmission is bolted to it. I'm inclined to have this one fixed up. If you want to pm me and let me know what you want for the tranny and TC, I will consider it.

About your FOM. Before you let the shop start on your transmissin please make sure they can get parts for it. It is so old that nobody but a few speciality transmission parts houses have anything that will fit. If I were you I would think long and hard about going to get the FOM you are beibg offered. Subject to inspection or such. IMHO Pete

Is the one in the car Aircooled or does it have lines from the rad?55 and early 56 had the Aircooled leftovers from 55.Tee-Bird.com has kits for both long and shortcase FOM's.There was a kit in the box from Tee-Bird on Ebay for $100.00.Unopened.

1957 Fairlane -- thanks for the tip on the show this weekend. I might end up contacting you about your trannies depending on the direction I head or what I find with mine. Thanks for the other feedback too, guys.

The transmission is air-cooled. I'll check for parts online once I figure out what FOM I have.

Parts for a Ford-o-matic are no problem as the Ford FMX is the same treansmission.

ERRR no. The FMX is not the same as a FOM.

Thats right, FOM was predcessor to FMX and front pump housing seals are different, most of the internals are same.

AussieBill, Correct me if I am wrong but the FOM has a rear oil pump and the FMX does not. The transmissions are in the same family as are the BW 8,12,65,66, and the AOD , AODE, and 4R70W but are very different transmissions. The FOM has the ring gear for the starter on the torque converter from 1951 to 1957, different flexplate. Lots of things are different. Pete

Everything you always wanted to know about the FOM and FMX but were afraid to ask.
