OK I bought this 57 fairlane 500 and I'm not sure how the overdrive works with the 3 speed on the tree. The lever is under the dash and I think ya pull it after you get into 3rd and start cruzing down the highway. Not real sure if you depress the clutch while pulling or not. I don't have a manual yet to read up on it. Hell I don't know if it even works. Help please......Sad

That handle under the dash is used to lock out the overdrive.If it's working as intended,when you get above 27 MPH,just let off the gas for a second and it will drop into overdrive.Leave the handle pushed in.

Be sure your brakes are up to snuff. With OD enabled (cable pushed IN) if the system is working properly the car will freewheel from about 20 mph down to whatever speed you're at when the trans input and output shaft speeds match up. Feels just like you disengaged the clutch. You'll need to clutch for a full stop.

No need to clutch when shifting into OD, just lift off the gas. You'll probably feel a slight lurch although sometimes it's so seamless you won't even notice it shifted.

DO NOT try to lock the OD out (pull the cable OUT) while moving unless you first kick it down with the kickdown switch and keep it kicked down while pulling the cable out; disagreeable noises ensue and possible damage to the system.
