Hi I recently installed a ford 303 three speed transmission into my 56 bird other than turning down front bearing retainer to fit bell it fit just fine I have read about cuting off imput shaft but I did not seem to have an issue with that as it slid up to the bell with no problem it has a brass pilot bearing from MACS, I cannot get it to release the disc seems to disengage fine from flywheel it has a 10 inch clutch was wondering if anyone can help me what is going on possibly pilot bearing to tight I tried it before and it seemed to fit ok it is a normal 292 pilot bushing the trans I beleave is out of mustang with a 289 any help would be appreciated I also have a lightened flywheel , my email is samueldonahue@hotmail.com thanks in advance

I dont know for sure but would be thinking the g/box input shaft is bottoming on pilot bush and continually engaged to engine, might need to recheck things,? just my initial thought.

All 3 times I've put a later model trans behind a Y bellhousing, I've used clay in the crank opening for the pilot bushing to check the clearance. Without the bushing in, so I could get the clay out. At least twice, I've had to shorten the input shaft of the tranny. We tied it down on the bench, and wrapped plastic and tape around the bearing to keep debris out. I turned the output yoke, and my more steady buddy, took a little off the shaft with a cutting wheel. Went way faster and easier than it sounds. Put a light bevel on when done. Checked again with clay. I think Mummerts site has a note about that for a T-5 adapter. I'd check it, just to be sure.
