Guys,
I was on the way to a shop for some transmission work on my 56 Fairlane when at 50 MPH the hood "FLEW OPEN".
Well it was a moment I will remember for a while. Wrapped the hood onto the top. Didn't break the new windshield or even dent the top. As you would expect the hood is now "u" shaped. It did however mess with the tops of the fenders.
Not bragging but I did win 2 first's this year in the modified class against some scrubs. I will put it back so we Ford guys can show them that these cars are crowd pleasers.
Lucky I have a spare hood................But does anyone have a passenger side hood hinge? I think it's to bent to straighten.

Bummer, Jim. Glad the damage was limited and you did not have a wreck or get hurt. My 56 hood jumped up on the safety latch once. Very unnerving. Tried to come up with a good way to put pins on it. Wound up readjusting the latch and making sure it closed correctly every time it is closed. TC

I took a tip from Walley Kirsten and put hood pins on the front lip of the hood pointing down. Drilled holes in the top of the grill opening and put the pins in through the grill. Works great and will not fly up. I'm even thinking of running my new setup without the hood latch. Chuck in NH

Great Explanation!

I saw Wally's set-up and it looks preety neat. I just made up a saftey chain after I saw the same thing happen to a freinds car. I just use two quick connect clevis hooks (for lack of a better term) and secure one end to the bracing under the hood and the other to the radiator support rod. This way there is no drilling or modifying of any parts. If the hood latch fails, the worst damage I would have would be a bent support rod, which I could easily fix. Rob

OOPS.... Didn't mean to offend any of my great north of the border "Y" brothers or the great ones from south of the equator.
I have a happy thanksgiving day everyday I wake up since the US Army infantry 66-68. Everything is great even a pealed back hood. AS Paul Harvey would say I'm just trying to live "the rest of the story".
Enjoy your cars....... I do mine!

I could be wrong on this, but I think Canada has a Holiday around now also. May not be Thanksgiving, but similar, so does Britain. (UK).

No offence taken as we already had our Thanks Giving holiday back in October. The nice thing is that my Mother-In-Law is from Boston, so I get two turkey dinners! I just don't get the day off work like you guys. Rob

Canadian Hot Rodder: What do you mean, day off. Since I retired I don't get any holidays, vacations, paid sick days, birthday off, etc, etc. Quit complaining. Happy Thanksgiving with your MIL, my friend. John

Hi Jim, Your 100% right, everyday is thanksgiving! 11B10 Infantry all the way to Vietnam 68 to 69, Draftee! You can't offend us northern boy's either. I was side by side with you "rebel" good guys! This past spring I posted my "nightmare" with my hood flying up. My fault though for never checking the safety latch which the spring was broke. As for hood hinges, I had mentioned here before, that I got rebuilt ones at SMS Restorations in Champlain,NY. They specialize in rebuilt hinges for old cars & advertize in Hemmings. They are kind of expensive but worth it! Just punch that name in Google & it should come up. Have a great Thanksgiving! Mike

By Canadian Hot Rodder - 18 Years Ago

Frank, I would love to play hookey (or is that hockey!), but the company I work for was just aquired by Johnson Controls and I don't want to push my luck with our new bosses! Oh and John, I wouldn't complain, from what Frank tells me, your life IS a holiday! Hehehe

Rob Yeah, but we don't even get a paid Holiday for Christmas!! If you'd seen him thrashing on his combine a month ago trying to get his beans in, Holiday would have been the last thought on your mind. I won't go near his house on days like that, fear, raw unadulterated fear is all that stops me!!

Frank, John should attach the front end of the combine to the Hurican, he'd have the feild done in secons flat!!! Rob
