Hey guys just wanted to know if a 351m will fit in a 1956 ford fairlane sunliner?
By oldcarmark - 12 Years Ago
I know a 272,292,or 312 WILL fit! 351M will fit Ford in the 1970's

Virtually any automotive engine can fit. Virtually any other engine is not going to simply bolt in.
The question is is it necessary for your goal and is it actually the most cost effective solution.

In my humble opion the 351M was the worst engine Ford ever built. Yes it will fit, I had one in a 56 sedan delivery. You will be a lot happier with a 351W. Tom

JMO, I second what ecode said. Even if the engine were "free", I think resources would be better spent rebuilding or repairing the stock engine. The 351M offers no real advantages but many more problems.

Ahem... You don't really expect someone on a Y-Block forum to tell you it is a good idea to install a 351. Which it isn't. I'm just curious WHY you would want to install one? Especially in a Sunliner? The value will go into the toilet.

The 351-M had a different type of mounts then the smallblocks, now if it was a 351-C you could bolt it in with some latemodel smallblock mounts but I would pass on that motor. You can get a 351-M to run good but you have to get rid of the factory detune to do it which includes a 1970 351-c timing chain set and a good cam and a 4 bbl but you could get that with just getting a 351-c. Y blocks were used up to 64 in the trucks so you should be able to come across one and then it will just bolt in,I have a 351-W in my 55 sunliner and getting all the parts to put a 292 in it.

Nothing wrong with putting a 292 back in it.Lots of them around.Might even find someone on this site close to you who has one.Post a classified with your area information.Sounds like a great project especially with the history behind it.If you have a good 312 crank you can use a 292 block and build a 312.How is the crank.Thats the hard item to find.

I'm with Oldcar on building a 312 out of a 292. I've seen 292's in self service wrecking yards in 64 and older Ford trucks for cheap. If the 312 crank isn't good then a 292 still isn't a bad alternative.
The 351M has no place in a '56 Ford.

I would agree with what's said and feel the 351m might be better used as a boat anchor. Stick with the original style motor even it costs a couple of thousand more, it is worth spending on a good car.

Haha, that's a good one. I've heard that saying way too many times about Y-Blocks from Ch*vy fans than I care to remember.

I was always told that boat anchor is a figure of speech that means the best there is.

Just to add to that. I have a Std bore 427 Ford block, which is a great motor, but I wouldn't put it in the T Bird because it just doesn't belong. In saying that, if they had come out with an FE option the stroker crank and alum heads would already be here.

This is certainly not the best site for 351 swap questions. First you have a 56 Sunliner, a super rare and desireable car amongst the Ford guys. Then you want to replace a Y-Block with a 351 (not Fords best moment). Working with part available on todays market a 500hp Y-Block for the street is not out of reach. For just a daily driver all levels of rebuilds are also out there. More parts are available now for the Y than ever before. Lastly, the resale value of a collectible car would plummet with the wrong engine. My 2 cents. Chuck

I wish I had stayed with my original plan to rebuild the original 272 but adapt a modern trans but I listened to a friend instead, all this went down before I got a computer and found out about the new parts being made for them. After driving mid 50s olds for years with the hydramatic the FOM sucked putting it mildly so I wanted nothing to do with it,I have noticed the 272 seemed to have more torque then the 351 I have in it now and cant wait to get the 292 rebuilt and installed but I need to raise the cash to do it so it might be a couple years so my advice it to find a Y block.

Actually, FOMs were quite good transmissions..yes they do start in 2nd gear while in Drive, (G.M. Powerglides are the same) but if you're in a hurry, is it really all that difficult to engage Low? And if you understand the trans, from Low, above 20 mph, put the lever momentarily back into drive & then snap it back into Low, & now it's locked in 2nd.. it's a fun move & works quite well... But don't forget to engage Drive again, before decending down to 20mph again.

I have since found a company that will make the FOM start out in first and at the time I yanked the original motor and trans did not know by putting the pedal to the floor it would start out in first,I knew about manually shifting them but was used to more modern automatic trans and those hyrdamatics and did not care much for the FOM. Might have been a good trans just to cruise around in but was not impressed with it after driving others.

Paul:

GM powerglides were 2 speed transmissions, they had no 2nd gear. Just low and drive. Not the same as FOMs.
By junkyardjeff - 12 Years Ago
I think the very early powerglides had to be shifted manually.

No question! Build a 292/312 or a 312 out of a 292. I will cost less in the long run, the car will have more value, run better and your Y-Block brothers will be much happier with you. Wink

Definately seek a Y block. I have a 79 F150 with the 351M, had it for 20 years as a regular driver but last few years have not been able to afford to drive it, 11MPG at best and I just replaced the motor with a freshened onE and no better mileage, should have put a Y block in it! then at least I would get 16 to 23!

Thanks again guy i will be looking for a 312 again or a 292 Smile

I went to the one of the largest weekly car shows in the North West a week or so ago and took my 53', she came with a flatty (block was cracked:/) but I worked for over a year to build a Y block and make it fit in her. Other than a couple of T-Birds, I was the only guy with a Y block at the show, their were hundreds of cars, and many of them would have had a Y's stock in them. My old girl is not much to look at yet, but she was a great conversation piece, tons of people came up to me and commented on her. It's fun being different from nearly everyone else (especially the sea of Ford owners that use scrub power)...

I went to a car show where a real nice 34 Ford street rod took the first place trophies for a Ford class and the best interior, but my plain painted Original 292 beat his chromed up 350 for the beat engine !!! I loved it.
