Gentlemen
I have acquired an engine without the 6015 casting code above the oil filter.
Anybody ever run into this before?
I"m trying to figure out what I have here. The crank flange has no "moon" on it.
I"m leaning towards a 292.
Whatcha all think?

Is it on the other side of the block, toward the generator?

Over here in Australia all the 272,s have NO casting number in usual spot above oil filter, just a stamped number on LH front of block and down behind starter .

They all are advertised as a 312 just rebuilt but they lost the paper work to prove it and the starter is bad so you cant hear it run.

Oldmics; That Canadian engine can be a real 312 as they used the same block for 292's and 312's. To check if it is a 312 without taking off the pan and checking rods/crankshaft look at the front of the engine on the drivers side just below the parting line between the left head and block there should be some letters and numbers. If it is a 57 312 block it will have the letters VV####, if a 56 block will have TV####.
Many of the 57 Canadain 312 crankshafts I have seen do not have the rivet on the crank flange for easy identification either. Lack of the crankshaft rivet is quite prevalent on the 57 blocks installed in Mercury's and Monarch's (Canadian equivalent of a Merc that was supplied to Ford dealers, Mercury's went to the Mercury dealers).
The 57 Canadian 312 blocks I have seen have the heavier webbing on the mains and the main bearing bolt holes drilled deep like the USA B9AE and C2AE blocks.

Could not find any letters as described.
Any other suggestions?
I will be pulling the engine to pull the pan but that wont be for a month or so yet.

Oldmics:
That is the only stamped place I know of. The stamping is not raised like the CECK on the block. The letters and numbers are stamped with a metal punch so are not always easy to read. You may have to take a wire wheel to clean that area of the block.
I will try to take pic later today to show where the stamping is located. marv
