What would be the correct tooth count for a speedometer gear, t85 overdrive trans with 410 gear ratio. This is an older t85 because it uses the 16 spline yoke, that is so hard to find. I put this trans in my 54 ranch wagon and need a gear, don't know where to start. I have seen repro gears on Ebay. Will the trans accept different tooth counts or do you have to get it right the first time.

You can switch the driven gears with no problem. If you didn't change the rear end ratio, then the original gear should be correct. This assumes that the drive gears inside the transmission have the same number of teeth in both transmissions.

Didn't you have to change the entire housing? I did when I put a T-85 in my '56. The speedo gear goes on top of the drive gear rather than on the bottom like a T-86. I need a gear too. Google speedometer gears & a whole lot of sites come up. I have the same problem with a 4:10 gear. I'm going to take a big leap & put a 23 tooth in mine. It came with a 19. My speedometer is 10 mph fast.

I have a 22 tooth gear in the car now but the speedo is about 10 MPH too fast at 65 MPH. If anyone has a 23 tooth gear or knows where to find one please let me know. Thanks, Alan S. Freeman

Thanks E.J. for the link but judging from their website it looks like the only style 23 tooth Ford gear is the post 1957 style. They do have the 1956 and earlier style but only up to 22 teeth. I will call them tomorrow just to make sure. Do you actually have a 23 tooth gear of the pre-1957 style? Alan

Dennis carpenter makes gears of various teeth and sells them to people like Casco for resale At a higher price then you can buy direct from Carpenter, so I would check with Dennis carpenter. Try a reducer from a 4 speed (Granny Geared) pick up and you get closer with less teeth.

I checked that website that Havava suggests and they list a 22 Tooth and call it "Very Rare" for $29.00 AND DENNIS CARPENTER MAKES THAT GEAR AND I BOUGHT IT FROM THEM FOR $10.00. I think that Carpenter is the best bet by far.

No one is reproducing the 23 tooth gear to my knowledge and the only NOS one that I have ever seen was on Ebay a few years ago. It was made for the police interceptor package. I got outbid on that one. I have the 22 tooth gear in my car but still have a 10 MPH speedometer error at 65 MPH. Alan S. Freeman

I got a 23 tooth gear from the website I posted before & with a T-85 with a 7 tooth transmission gear & 4:10 rear end my speedometer is dead on with a GPS. I haven't got on the interstate & checked the odometer yet. I called them to make sure we was all on the same page.
