Can I get some suggestions for radio speakers that will sound good and fit properly in my 1956 Fairlane Club Sedan? I want to replace the old speaker in the dash and probably add two in the package tray in the back. My radio is just a stocker Town and County. No amp or anything. Looking for the best sound I can get, of course, with this stock arrangement. A couple people have recommended 6"x9" with a 30-50 watt range. Thank you! Ron

Ron,

I'm lazy and have some components to put in my ute. I listen to music all day every day, Radio goes on with the ignition in my cars. the radio is on all day at work. My thinking was similar to yours I want the sound quality but not the hardware in the car. I'm also apposed to cutting up a car to put in speakers and the like. So I've done some investigation and thinking.

There are several companies that make speakers specifically for "old" oem fitments. a two second google search produced this http://www.vintagecarradio.com/store/index.php?cPath=2_492. from browsing previously I found plenty copies of old radios and companies that put new components in old radios. Fancy a usb port in your old radio? there is a big market for Classic appearance modern clairity and output. And of corse speakers to suit

If you don't wan't a revampt radio. you can either hide a head unit (eg glovebox), many have remote controls. Also there are still mounting units for head units. some marine ones have doors that hide the face. these can be trimed or painted to suit. Again with speakers if you use the original speaker mount some of the replacement speaker are stereo but I would imagine that a lot of the benifit would be lost having them so close to each other. Instead of cutting up you parcel tray I would sugest buying some enclosures there is an enormous range from big boxes to ones that only just fit the speakers. Again these can be trimed or painted to suit and screw holes are easier to fix than large holes.

Don't ignor a amp you cannot get the highs and lows without one. just think of your home stereo. I can do without the DOFF DOFF but a woffer and some tweeters will give you a greater range. Volume controls work both ways. amps can live in trunks or under seats

For me a head unit in a housing all black and right under the dash, green lights to match the car, a set of 340w 6.5" component seakers mounted in enclosures either side of the seat as there is a 6"-8" gap and deep because there is space for a spare and storeage behind the seat in 56 mainline utes. Tweeters high on the kick panel. There's space on the rear wall behind the seat for a 600w amp and a slimline Active enclosure (amp subwofer unit). High tones and voices need to be unobstructed, mid tones less so, a bass Woffer can go anyware.

Have the hardware hide it, enjoy the sound quality.

Cheers

I like my "vintage" music to go along with my car. I use Kenwood Dual Dash Speaker in the stock position in my '55 Ranchwagon along with two Under Cover Speakers under the rear seat. I have two more Under Cover Speakers in the Way Back for when we're tailgatin'.

I know you just asked about speakers but this is the head unit I have. Secret Audio It's wired so when I turn on my original radio it turns on.

It's remote controlled and has a USB port to plug in your iPod or Memory stick for unlimited Musack... Smooooth
