how to remove a 56 ford fairlane steering column

Ive removed my dash on my 56 ford victoria now i need to remove the steering column the shop manual does explain how to do this,This is a 3 speed manual column shift car,thanks

If you have the 56 Shop Manual go to page 173.Basically you have to undo the clamp that holds the outer housing to the box.It slides off the box.Remove your gear shift levers and tube.Pull the outer housing inside the car.The box itself comes off in the engine compartment.I just replaced my box a liitle while ago.I had to remove the outer housing but mine is an automatic.Disconnect the wiring under the dash for the turn signals. If you want to remove the seal at the bottom of the column at the floor(covered by tin covers) you might not have to remove the shift levers.It might all clear with the bigger hole in the firewall.

Sounds the same as mine, if so don't forget to unplug the horn wire. the wire goes through the column and through the steering box and has a bullet plug on it. The wire has to come through the box as you remove the column, so be careful not to damage it.

The Horn Wire can be removed from the box input shaft after its unplugged at the bottom of the column in the engine compartment.Just pull it out of the input shaft carefully so as not to catch it on the inside of the shaft.Its not affected when you remove the outer housing unless the T-Bird setup is different from the Passenger Cars?If you take the gearshift assembly out its a good time to repair it with new parts if any are worn which is very likely in a 50+ year old car.Especially standard transmission cars.

It could have been removed from the top with the horn ring removed, but I was unsure how difficult it would be to feed back through the column, so I left mine in and removed the column with the wire still in it. I had a second set of hands, which was definitely needed.
