Sounds the same as mine, if so don't forget to unplug the horn wire. the wire goes through the column and through the steering box and has a bullet plug on it. The wire has to come through the box as you remove the column, so be careful not to damage it.
The Horn Wire can be removed from the box input shaft after its unplugged at the bottom of the column in the engine compartment.Just pull it out of the input shaft carefully so as not to catch it on the inside of the shaft. Its not affected when you remove the outer housing unless the T-Bird setup is different from the Passenger Cars?If you take the gearshift assembly out its a good time to repair it with new parts if any are worn which is very likely in a 50+ year old car.Especially standard transmission cars.
