Hi all, 1st timer so please be gentle. Just wondering why my '59 Star Model' 3 on the tree is sticking in second gear and makes a whining sound when coasting, it seems a little worse of late. Stay safe over xmas and merry xmas from Brisbane Australia.

Not many replies? There are a lot of things that could be wrong but the only way to tell for sure will be to pull the transmission and open it up. Could be an input shaft bearing/bushing but thats a total guess. There must be a rebuilder in OZ that can take a look at it for you. Stick transmissions are fairly straight forward in the old Fords and not that hard to redo. Chuck in NH

Hey Joe , Another Brisbane ( Albany Creek ) boy here. Could be just plain worn out ?? XA or XB Falcon manual boxes could be worth a look as there linkage will be on the same side as your "Star " model .Early Customlines ( up to 1958 ) still used the USA gearbox.Jamming gears & linkage was always a problem as the linkage went down under the box and up the other side to our passenger side .The "Star " model used an Aussie made box as the selectors were on the drivers side (RHD ) .Also the Falcon boxes have synchro on 1st gear ?? Those Y-Blocks sure go good with a Top Loader behind them . Regards Lon

Moz , As you know ,I don't like to boast ? I could count on one hand ( with 3 fingers missing ) just how many Canadians are on this site ???? I know its a long way from Canada to USA ,maybe that's why there are so few of them there "Great White Northerners "on this site .Us "Southerners " on the other hand ,sure have a lot of members .I'm sure Rob will come up with an excuse ,I mean reason ,why there are so few of them .???? Hi All, I am not from down under although I have visited Lon a couple times, Great folks he and his mates are. I am more up in Chucks neck of the woods although I have not met him yet. Now to the question, it may not be the transmission at all, if the rearend pinion bearing is worn out you will get a whine when coasting, I drove a car 1200 miles with a worn out pinion bearing and as long as I kept torque on it, it was fine but going down hills and letting off the gas on flats was an awful whine but those rearends are tough and I made it and changed the 3rd member as soon as I got home. Believe it or not I have seen old farmers mix sawdust with the gear oil to quite noisy transmissions down. I guess the wood chips took up the slack in the teeth and cusioned the contact but I think a rebuild would be more appropriate for long term use and peace of mind.

Regarding the noise, damage is likely already done if the tranny is simply out of or low on oil but has the oil level been checked. Refilling it if it’s low could potentially fix the problem.

No worries, I've had the old girl for a few years now, so there's no rush to get things done and from what I've read on this great site the knowledge tree is pretty extensive, so I'll process all the advise, enjoy the christmas season and tackle the problem in the new year. Stay safe, all the best.
