I Have always had an interest in those who also test modify carbs for racing, or other purposes.  I love the Autolite Carbs & am glad to see someone elso who had done some crazy mods, even if it is a "race only" carb considering what he has done to it!  I think that no one should go out & grind on their carb unless they are prepared to throw it away if it doesn't work, or worse yet if it runs improperly & burns a valve or something worse.  But I appreciate the atempt this guy has made!

I notice that the bottom side of the throttle shaft was removed. I have to wonder how that carb works without a venturi. I realize that the boosters will create a venturi, but there are circuits that use the regular venturi.

I have considered the need for the throttles to be circular and whether carbs could be hacked to look like the secondaries on a Rochester Quadrajet. The advantage is the reduced turbulence.

Also interesting to me is the variable venturi carbs used in the late 70's on engines like the 302 in Mustangs. I have one of these on my MGB and they were used on a BMW motorcycle that I had. They work well when they're working right. The Brits seem to use them often, including on the V8 powered MGB.

PC,

Do you mean a constant-velocity carburetor?  Most of the BMW motorcycles between 70 and 95 used a Bing CV carburetor.  The exceptions being the R50, R60, R90S and the K models.

And the Brit cars used SU's from the early fifties thru the EFI era, they changed to Strombergs in the early 70's.

When did Ford use a Variable veturii carb on the 302, never heard of of this.

I had 81 Mercury Colony Park with VV Carb.

My '82 wagon had one.  What a joke.  The variable venturi was in the top of the carb, diaphragm operated.  So, when you opened the throttle, there was a lag before the venturi began to open.  Like a carb with the accelerator pump not working.  I soon replaced it with a normal 2 barrel Autolite, got much better driveability and better mileage.  Probably wouldn't have passed an emissions test though.  Luckily, Indiana is a backward state and doesn't have annual testing yet.  Wondered why the politicians haven't figured a way to line their pockets by implementing such a program?  Yet.

You still got it or did it wind up in the scrap pile? I'd like to see it out of morbid curiosity.

Sold it years ago for almost nothing.  I also had an '82 LTD with one of those on a 255 engine.  What a loser.  Used the front sheetmetal to fix the wagon when it got wrecked (I didn't wreck it, but I think you know the person who did) and juhked the rest of that car.  Wish I'd known you'd like to see the carb, I'd have given it to you.

Most all  the 302's and 351's of the 79-83 era had the VV carbs.I had a 79 that was awful and then an 82 that we put 200,000 miles on without ever touching the carb and it ran great. The junk yards should have a lot of them laying around.

I guess I wasn't paying attention to Fords then. Was more interested in sailing and redheads at that point. Lost the redhead, still have a sailboat.

We'd better not go any further with the "wrecked the car discussion" you could get hurt.

The bent station wagon didn't freak me out nearly as much as when she set the dual quad setup (on the '56 Bird) on fire.  After I got it fixed up and the hood repainted, she did it again.  That's when I got the order to take the duals off.  Luckily, there was no permanent damage to the rare '56 intake or the correct '56 2-4 carbs.  Since her knee and hip replacements won't allow her to get into or drive the Bird any more, I keep thinking I'll put them back on one of these days.  I never started any fires with them.  May take the FMX out and put the T85 OD back in too.

And race it in pure stock.........? I need a supervisor.
By Hoosier Hurricane - 17 Years Ago
Can't race it in pure stock, it was not a factory installed option.  Over the counter, dealer installed.

probably never get it through Tech with all the old timers there.
