292 vs. 312

Hi!, everyone great site you have!. I have a 1956 f-100 I have been restoring and have gathered some engines, I am to the point of figuring out which engine i should use, i have a 292 bored .060 and a 312 standard bore both came out of grain trucks. My question is if i use the 292, do i have a lot to worry ab out as far as temperature wise? the block is in good shape, but i sure like the idea of a 312, but it needs boring. I am at a crossroads in my project which i'm sure a lot of you guys can relate. Thank you for your insight! looking forward to being a member on this sight!

from what i have read here, go with the 292. the 312's had lots of problems with the main webs cracking. now, if you want to get a lil wild, take that 312 crank and put it in the 292 block. others will chime in here as to the specifics of the 312 crank in the 292 block. also, from what i understand, the 292 block can be taken out to 80 over which from my understanding puts the bore at the 312 size. but like i said, others will chime in.

Hey! thanks i would love to hear about that one! do you know which front engine mount bracket i should use? seems like every bracket i have from other engines i have are all different? the truck had a 6 cylinder.

Welcome to the site Todd.

The 312 crankshaft goes into the 292 block by just turning the mains down to the 292 size.  Your block already being at 0.060” is typically not a problem for the 292’s but not all blocks can go larger than this.  Cylinder wall thickness varies considerably on the different blocks so where some are only okay at 0.060” over, there are a limited number of others that will actually bore out to 4.000” with metal to spare.  Having your block(s) sonic tested will let you know exactly what is available in the cylinder walls in regards to thickness.

Someone else will need to chime in regarding your motor mount requirements though.  I'm far from being the truck expert but there are several on this site that are.

If your '56 is anything like a '61 you will have to make a mount for the Y and weld it to the frame.  In this case the front bracket doesn't really matter - just make the mount work with your bracket and frame.  I have some pictures of the front mount in my gallery at ford-trucks.com.  It'll give you an idea, if it's not exactly the same.

Todd; Just for info, Ford made pistons for the 312 up to.040 over, as I recall. Yes, if you decide to try the 312 blk, you need to check the mains around the bolts for cracks, usually caused by over torqing the main bolts or using incorrect length bolts. Assembly errors on these engines can be avoided by going to John Mummert's Y-block site where he has accumulated a list of assembly errors. The 312 (if it is?) came out of a truck? That is unusual except for a few that were apparently sold in Canada in the 60s. And a correction, a 312 bore was .050 over a 292.

This is a picture of a mount from a '64 if it helps.  If you are going to need a crossmember welded in place it wont matter what mount you use.
