I can't get under the car right now and I can't locate any pictures that displays that side of engine but I want to do away with canister oil filter and go with adapter and spin-on filter. Don't know if the breather tube that hangs down (leaking oil now) is part of filter or something sperate. I was told to take it out and clean up to stop dripping....do you need to drain oil first to do this? Any pictures or advise, please.

You can remove it . If you do and plug the hole you need to create some type of vent for the gases to go otherwise "BOOM". I put oil breathers on the valve covers a few years back and it works fine. The oil filler tube kept blowing off my cap till I installed the breathers. But in answer to your question it is totally independent and can be removed. 55birdman

Breather tube is separate and you do not have to drain oil for removal.

Thanks for the help to what you must think is pretty dumb question. I like the idea of putting breathers on the valve covers. Just got back from Kragen Auto Parts and they didn't have adapter for spin-on oil filter so I'll check with NAPA tomorrow. Have interior finished now so want to work on that so I can change the oil ( just learned I should be using 20W/50 oil instead of the 10W/30 that I have been using) and want to pull starter and clean it up to see if that has been hanging up causing banging noise.

Ron: this might help, it's Ford's #B7A- 6714-A, it is the original adaptor kit number.

Sounds even better than breathers...could you explain how to hook up PCV setup. Also, is it worth the trouble to adapt to spin-on filter?

Tee Bird Products and the other resto suppliers will have the spin on adapter kit too. Not sure local parts house will carry them? Might have to mail-order.

San Diego Ron (1/23/2008) Also, is it worth the trouble to adapt to spin-on filter?Definite Yes. Once you have the spin on oil filter kit, then it’s simply a matter of removing the original nut and steel plate and replacing with the new pieces. Be sure to remove the old gasket. If you don’t find the kit, then any Y engine or 223 six cylinder engine from a ’57 and up will have the necessary pieces on them to accomplish the same thing as the kit.

I am new here, so hopefully I get this right. I have a 57 YBlock and purchased finned valley and valve covers. The original valley cover had a vent at the rear and an oil fill tube at the front. Unless I can modify the finned valley cover, I may have to return it and use the original. I do not want to modify the valve covers becasue they are so visible. Has anyone ever had this issue and if so, is there a solution to use the finned valley cover?

You can modify the valley cover as detailed here: http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic19139-6-1.aspx I think cast covers look alright with breathers: http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic3719-3-1.aspx

OK--NAPA DOES STILL HAVE THE ADAPTER--BUT WATCH OUT--DON'T BUY A 'KIT' THAT HAS BEEN OPENED AND THEN SORT OF 'RESEALED'.. I DID AND COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT BETWEEN THE BLOCK AND THE ADAPTER---IT WAS 'TOO LOOSE'--AND NOTHING WAS IN THE PACKAGE THAT WENT THERE.....SOOOO... I 'MADE A 'GASKET' FROM SOME OLD RUBBER LAYING AROUND AND IT 'WORKED' OK... THEN....3 YEARS LATER I WAS COMING OFF THE E-WAY BY MY HOUSE AND NOTICED THE 'SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER MY HOOD AND THE OIL PRESSURE WAS GOING TO ZERO-----I PULLED IN THE RITE AID PARKING LOT AND SHUT DOWN.. LOOKED UNDER AND ALL MY OIL (6 QT.S) WERE ON THE GROUND.. IT WAS ALL COMING FROM THE OIL FILTER AREA..I THOUGHT IT WAS A BAD FILTER...SO WENT IN RITE AID AND BOUGHT A NEW FILTER AND PUT 5 QT.S OF OIL IN.....STARTED UP....ALL OIL PUMPED TO GROUND.........CLEANED OFF GOOD ENOUGH TO SEE THAT MY 'GASKET' HAD 'FAILED'.....IT SWELLLED UP.CAUSEING IT TO LEAK AROUND THE SWELLED UP PLACES...(SOME RUBBER DOES THIS--SOME DOES NOT) AND ALL THE OIL WAS LEAKING PAST........CALLED FRIEND TO BRING ME SOME 'GASKET PAPER' AND 'MADE' A NEW GASKET FROM THAT..BOUGHT 6 MORE QT'S OF OIL....GOT HOME OK...BUT WHEN THE CAR WAS 'COLD' ON THE FIRST STARTS OF THE DAY---THIS LEAKED TOO, BUT ONLY A FEW DROPS....WENT TO NAPA (THE FIRST KIT WAS FROM A MAJOR T-BIRD PARTS DEPOT) I'M NOT GOING TO NAME NAMES----AND GOT THE NAPA KIT AND LOW AND BEHOLD---THERE IS A RUBBER GASKET IN THE KIT THAT DOES NOT SWELL UP FROM OIL HITTING IT...INSTALLED THIS----NOW ALL IS OK..BUT WHAT ABOUT THE 14 FOOT LONG OIL SLICK I LEFT IN RITE AIDS LOT??? I FELT BAD ABOUT POLLUTING AND MAKING A BIG MESS...SO I WENT IN RITE AID AND BOUGHT A BAG OF CAT LITTER FOR 5 WEEKS IN A ROW EVERY FRIDAY AND SPREAD IT AROUND TO CLEAN IT--AND THEN TOOK THE SWEEPINGS WITH ME...THE 4TH TIME I DID THIS THE OWNER OF RITE AID CAME OUTSIDE AND ASKED WHY I WAS CLEANING HIS PARKING LOT AND I SAID I WAS THE ONE WHO MESSED IT UP-----HE THANKED ME FOR 5 MINUTES--SAYING NOBODY DOES THAT ANYMORE----FINALLY, ABOUT A YEAR LATER, WHEN I DRIVE BYE RITE AID-- I LOOK OVER AT 'MY STAIN OF SHAME' AND NOW IT'S GONE--MY CAT LITTER AND THE RAIN SORT OF 'ERASED' IT.. NOW YOU CAN'T TELL IT WAS WHAT IT WAS.....SO BE CAREFUL OF OPENED PACKAGES--SOMEONE TOOK THAT GASKET--LEFT THE REST TO SCREW SOMEBODY (ME) AND THAT'S THAT.......BYE........ED
