New on here ... Hear me out I picked up a 1956 customline that I'm trying to get running / slow restore for my dad
Pulled the seized 292 out that was I. There and put in a "it ran" 272 so numbers matched... Cleaned it al up and gasket kitted the motor... With shit head gaskets it pulled 30psi all cylinders placed back in car and wired everything up had some issues with distributor points but got spark... Pulling 70~ psi all cylinders. Its timing seems right per timing light manually feel for TDC and checking marks... Cranks over and sounds good cranking speeds up like it wants to fire and then back to normal cranking...
15486372 firing used New plugs & wires New oil Carb rebuilt but using starting fluid Psi 70~

Hi there wasabi welcome where are you? 70 psi seems low ,should be around 160psi for 2barrel or 155 for 4 barrel firing order is correct cylinder numbering is (facing forward from drivers seat) 1 2 3 4 right side from the front of engine and 5 6 7 8 front to rear left side i'm sure others on this site who are a lot more capable than myself will soon chime in good luck stuey UK

Counter clockwise firing order? Did you check compression with all plugs out and the carb open? That will give you a more accurate reading. If compression is that low it may be very difficult to start. Chuck

It is best to open the choke when running a compression test.

My guess is the compression is to low but double check firing order as the other guys have said see what happens

I'm in the US in Idaho...
Counterclockwise is used on distributior
Check compression with carb off and plugs in... Can do it the otherway tonight....
Per the video she is so close to running

So I have 40 to 90 psi all over 90-40-40-40 and 60-40-60-40 ??? No plugs throttle open...
Why would this be all over the place when I had solid 30psi on old head gaskets ????
And is this spinning enough to get oil to help seal the pistons up... My thought is the rings might be a little froze until it runs for a bit but I dono anymore

The rule of thumb for compression readings is that they all be within 10% of each other. Your numbers far exceed this so you’ll need to dig deeper. Putting air on the cylinders will help determine if you have valve issues or piston ring problems at the cylinders. Even an engine with 8.0:1 cr will have 130 psi pressure at the cylinders during cranking so you’re numbers need to be higher. A consistent 90 psi across the board should at least get you cranked up though. .. Altitude will inversely affect the readings.
Edit - and Ted reminded us that a misaligned or badly worn timing chain could lower compression readings.

Alright guys...
Did the ATF trick and rechecked the compression 90psi in most cylinders... Hooked up gravity feed tank and cranked over and everything started on fire... Found leak in carb... Took carb off recleaned again and placed on car....
Tried one last time she cranked over and I pumped her a few times and she fired up and started idling like she wanted to be alive again... Thanks for all your help so far I will be back and share the knowledge I have gained preserving my piece of the past thanks again
