I need to replace my 1957 steering box as it has a flat spot in it. The existing box is Casting # AJ-3550-C on the main case. Does anyone have the casting # (preferred) or part # for a 58 box, as I'm looking for one. I've been told the 58 box is an improved design, but should bolt right in.

Give Mike at zeb's Auto salvage in Tigerton, Wi. as call as he has the Hollander Book that says what works with what as well as both examples of '57 and '58 in his yard. He should be able to help but the snow may slow looking at them in the yard down this time of year. He will probably ship if he can help you out. mention that I suggested that you call, it may motivate him a little. LOL he is at (715) 754-5885 Central Time.

Here in Oz the best replacement used to be 59-60 Fairlanes. The steering box is a recirculating ball design and is an improved design over the 55-8 Oz design. These steering boxes were a simple swap over though they are very scarce nowadays here in Oz. The Tank Fairlane as we call them have not survived as well as the earlier Custom lines. It was commonly held that the 55 boxes were better than the latest versions as the worms were harder???

Further to my earlier post, the parts manual shows 58-60 boxes as all being the same. If you want to keep your horn working you will need the later setup as these columns do not have the wire running up the centre of the column but use a brush spring contact plate. It is probably easier if you want use one of these steering boxes to replace the complete column. Replacement worms and sector gears are available from the normal suppliers for your steering box which is probably an easier way to go, after all, yours has lasted 57 years.

Jonas: If you go the 58 or later box, buy the entire column assembly, cause while the box is almost a bolt in, (there are a couple of glitches, like your tube needs to be shortened & filing the splines may be required re fitting the Pitman arm & or steering wheel) but the real hangup is, as mentioned, the horn setup is "entirely different" & turns into a mini nightmare to sort out. Trust me, I know.. P.S.- Can't confirm it, but I was told that 59 boxes may have a longer steering shaft, which might be a problem. ?.
