will a 2 sleeve 7 1/4 dia water pump pulley off of a 390 engine # C8AE-8509-A work on a 292 ?

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. It may hit the crank pulley. I'll measure the one I have and come back with a W.A.G.

the origin one is a single sleeve 7 1/4 so that should not be a problem

OK so what's the setback/depth of your current pulley? IIRC you measure on the inside to eliminate the thickness of the pulley. If the depth of the 390 pulley is less than what you have, ain't gonna fly. Yes, the mount on the w/pump can be moved to accommodate the difference. If you're not using the vehicle as a daily driver AND you have a puller, you can do this. Better to get one the correct depth or a bit deeper. You can always use a shim or two, but you can't take them away if you have to change a water pump, in the dark, when it's 120 degrees in the shade, you're getting cold cuz you ain't gots no blanket, and you're in Noneck Nevada

I believe that typically, Fords have the same 4 bolt flange hole pattern - but some have a different WP shaft size - 5/8 on Y-block passenger cars / 3/4 on the truck.

I'm reading and thinking the word "sleeve" should be the word "sheave" in this thread. The sheaves of the pulley being the belt grooves. Right?

GB you're correct. Don't ask how I learned this. It is really easy to open them up, but making them smaller takes some doing. The distance from the W/P base to the pulley mount is also different
