Has anyone heard anything on the Y Block book that's supposed to be coming out on building performance engines.
By The Master Cylinder - 11 Years Ago
Gary, I preordered it from Amazon.com. Ford Y-Block Engines I recently got an e-mail that it was due out in March. The release date was postponed due to the Hurricane Sandy?
By slumlord444 - 11 Years Ago
Also pre ordered No e mail recently. Was wondering if I would ever get it or was just out of luck. Not sure if I kept any paperwork on the order.
By NoShortcuts - 11 Years Ago
I pre-ordered, also, but have not heard anything as yet...

Our Forum archive is certainly loaded with information, but takes some serious patience to wade through many times.

Two Car Tech published books that I have found interesting reading are David Vizard's 'How To Build Horsepower' (2010) and 'How To Port & Flow Test' (2012). These are loaded with a mix of theoretical and practical application information based on Vizard's 50+ years of modifying engines.
By speedpro56 - 11 Years Ago
I preordered mine as well and haven't hears a thing, sure hope we get it in march.

Thanks for the replies.

If you read down in the 'Product Details' on the Amazon link it also indicates "March 15, 2014"... Smooooth

Barnes and Noble also has it for pre-order.

It is available for $9.99 as an ebook. Available date is listed as March 1, 2014

Haven't heard the latest but I want one, when using the link though you need to sign up to a google account, I don't need anymore stinkin accounts, can't remember all the passwords for the ones I already have. Why do they make us go through account overloads?

I have a feeling this book is still going to be a while before it is officially published. I almost think the publishers are waiting to see how many people like us make the "pre-order" before they actually make their first run of books.
By Jimz Bird - 11 Years Ago
I got mine.

It is the digital edition and it is complete so it would appear it is printed.

Hard copies are probably shipping or will be soon.

I did scan through and look at each page.
I will leave a review to those more comptent than I to do so.
I will say that it is a through disassembly/assembly of a Stock 292 and a 322 Supercharged
with input from Jerry Christenson and Richard Stuck.
Also with a mention in the Acknowledgements of Tim McMaster.
For those of us without a lot of experience it is quite valuable. It has lots of good color pictures.

There are pros and cons of the Digital Edition as you no doubt are aware.

I ordered two of these printed books (at about the same time as Charlie Brown) and I have not received an email yet... They are in my amazon cue as ordered however.

UPDATE: my account page said "not yet shipped" but it says I should receive it by March 25. Is that 2014 or 2015 lol?

If the digital version when public then I would assume that it is a good possibility that we will get the printed copy soon.
By slumlord444 - 11 Years Ago

Got an Email yesterday. Release date was supposed to be 3-24-14. They will notify me when it is released. No date given. First thing I have heard since I placed the order. Patiently waiting. It has been a year since I placed my order.
By MoonShadow - 11 Years Ago
I thought the author was known to some of our friends here and also consulted with Ted Eaton and John Mummert for the book. As I recall the initial printing went with the hurricane that hit the Jersey shore. Hopefully just a bit more paitence and we'll have it. Chuck
By Daniel Jessup - 11 Years Ago
I just go another email from amazon saying that the book scheduled to be shipped to me by today's date (3/25) has not yet been released and they will notify me when it does. They did not give another date to say that it will be available on xx/xx/xx. So, I guess we are just waiting. Kind of surprised that if it is available digitally it should be in print and ready to go now. Guess I am going to have to get on the Kindlefire tonight!
By charliemccraney - 11 Years Ago
Hopefully it's not by Edelbrock publishing and they're pulling the same thing they did with the new 3 x 2 intakes a couple years ago.
By The Master Cylinder - 11 Years Ago
You got to love it. Amazon says "Temporarily out of stock". Like it was ever in stock?

We are writing to let you know that the book you pre-ordered, listed below, is now available in your Google Play Books Library. You have been charged the amount listed below.
Order date: Feb 20, 2014 2:58:34 PM PST
ItemPrice
Ford Y-Block Engines: How to Rebuild & Modify$9.99

Keep in mind this is Digital online ebook and not pdf thus it is not real flexible and somewhat awkward to use.
As The Horvaths mentioned. "Hey,you'll never get your digital book dirty!"
It can be previewed on Google Play to see if you think it is worth the 10 bucks to you.
I will also get the Hard Copy when it is released. I was just a bit impatient.
The one advantage is that the ebook is "searchable".
It's curious to me how it ended up on Google Play and not as a Kindal ebook.

I wonder too why it is not available on Kindle.. much better reader for me. The other thing that stinks about the Digital Book... it is ONLINE ONLY!!! You cannot save this to a file and read when you do not have Wifi available. If I would have known that I would have not bought the digital version too. Still waiting on my two copies of the book in print. Crazy

There is possibility to get it saved for offline reading. Here is some help for it. https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2851654?hl=en

That is indeed the 2010 EMC Y-Block engine entry on the cover.  Jerry Christenson was part of the EMC crew in 2009 and as such, he likely supplied the picture for the cover.  I did not have any direct input in this book so I'm waiting along with everyone else to get my first look at the inside of the book.
By PF Arcand - 11 Years Ago
Ted: I can't speak for other regulars on this site, but unless it was your decision not to have input re the new Y-Block book, I'm starting to have doubts about how good this book will be. While there are a few other well informed people, who have in depth knowledge about the Y-blk, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone else, who is overall better informed about our favorite engine than yourself !   I'm initially disappointed & wondering if the new book might end up being less than many hoped for....  For those that aren't aware, the only other book like this was published in 1984, and while useful, it's definately out dated and also contains some errors & controversial recommendations. All we can do now is hope that my concerns are unfounded...
By slick56 - 11 Years Ago
Received this tonight from Amazon !!!
By Daniel Jessup - 11 Years Ago
I have read most of the book via the digital download though I have not poured over every page. This is all my opinion so yall can take it for what it is worth lol, but ...

1. the book is heavy on photos and diagrams which makes things very clear to the uninitiated. The timing gears/chain debacle is thoroughly covered, with a section in the performance side about advance/retard. The added bonus is that the book was full of color photos. I liked that part of it also, but I do not know if the PRINT version will have color photos. The cover sure looks good.

2. there is no doubt in my mind that Charlie Morris knows how to build an engine, and specifically a Y block. Whether or not he does a good job conveying that to the reader, you can decide for yourself, but my opinion is that the content does a very good job.

3. Unlike the 1984 book by Eickman (spelling?) and Motorbooks, Charlie does not cover the "history" of the Y block like the previous book did. There are some "errors" here or there in that regard... maybe something about blocks and what years up to 62, or 64, etc, but I cannot remember the exact verbiage I read on it.

4. Unlike the original book as well, Charlie spends a bit of time covering a performance build. It was good that he did two builds, or at least he showed a stock rebuild and some tips/tricks and then went to doing a performance motor... I assume with some help from Jerry Christenson from what I read.

5. My opinion is that the fellas on this sit will like the book - though there may be some nitpicking here and there at Charlie. I for one, I am very happy to see something like this.

6. If this sales well, maybe there will be enough momentum for another major publisher to contact some of you guys on here that do this for a living and get some of you to corroborate/collaborate/communicate and come together on a book that is solely for Y performance coming at it from all angles. That would be great in my opinion.

I give Charlie's book a 9/10 stars. Smile

I received what follows at 6:30 this morning (April Fool's Day!) via my e-mail account with Amazon:

Like Paul, I'm apprehensive about what's been published.  Previous threads have given praise to the author's prior accomplishments.  Personally, I can't imagine writing a book depicting Y-block Ford building without involving a number of individuals who participate on this Forum.

I hope that individuals like Ted Eaton, John Mummert, Tim McMaster, John (Hoosier), to name but a few of our knowledgeable regular participants, will have the time to read and digest this publication and be able to share with us any alternate views they might have on what has been put in print.

Comment:  The Archive section of this Forum has been invaluable to me in the time that I have been a member.  With the necessary computer software changes, I'm finding digging back into old threads seemingly less fruitful.  I hope my sense that GOOD information previously shared by our members is now 'missing' is incorrect...:   Crying

Funny thing... got a shipment pending notice on this book/order from Amazon yesterday, then this morning a notice that payment was declined on a credit card I used back in February 2013 that was canceled due to theft but I never updated the order... when I went to update the cc information, they already had a current card on file from recvent orders, but apparently couldn't automatically apply the new card to this old order...

Anyway, looks like they're serious about the April 4th delivery date... woo woot.

FWIW... Brian

Weirdness continues... new email this morning says "estimated delivery date of Friday, April 4th", but the embedded tracking icon says it's actually no longer "in-transit" but is now "out for delivery"... too late for an April Fool's joke I hope. Perhaps other's with orders will also get them sooner than expected.

We had heard that the author, Charles Morris, lived in the area where Hurricane Sandy hit hard. Lost his home and more… I believe Frank knows more. Anyway, that's one of the reasons why I have been trying to be patient.

Dennis, I agree, It's unfortunate that degreeing the cam was overlooked/left out, especially since there are a couple of pictures of the crank sprocket explaining the keyway degrees. Maybe they figured we could find that info elsewhere.

On a side note I noticed that the Hollowheads from Poland  are referred to as "The Knuckleheads"?? Haha w00tw00t

By Daniel Jessup - 11 Years Ago
My books came in today as well. Very well put together.  You have to be downright nitpickin' to throw rocks at the thing. There are some informational tidbits left out of course, and there are some typos here and there. Too bad that some of us could not have proofed the book before it went to print. I do wish he would have mentioned/shown what rods he used in the performance build at the end of the book.
By Hollow Head - 11 Years Ago
We have seen a band here in Finland which is called "Knuclebone Oscar" and it plays mighty good rock'n roll BigGrin. And we sure do not Polish our cars too often... Haven't seen the book yet, but must have been a shock to see something done here in Finland w00t. We might have done something new when the second edition of the book launches... hopefully.
By Ted - 11 Years Ago
My copy of the book arrived yesterday.  While I've simply thumbed through the pages so far and haven't done a detailed read, the book looks like it will be a good reference for those that are wanting to work on their own engines.  Looks to be a high quality paper and the pictures are good and clear.  Didn't see a credit or explanation for the front cover picture though.
By RB - 11 Years Ago
Ted , Jerry C talked to Charlie recently.  Charlie had no Idea what the cover picture would be, he had no input.. The publisher found it the picture and used it...
By Lancer - 11 Years Ago
Got my book as well, it sure would have been handy when I blew the motor in my 57 wagon. I'm used to chevys, inline six Fords and Mopars so this was pretty new to me. Lots of little quirky things with these motors. But, I do like them.
By Hollow Head - 11 Years Ago
Got mine today ( Thanks to Charlie ) and book looks good. All pictures are good quality, well organized and easily readable. Couple of mishaps occurred but those are not his faults. On page 102 captions under pics #7 and #8 must have been switched... One of our pics has caption from another planet, as our pistons are nothing special. That picture just shows how head gaskets blow under boost pressure (or detonation). And those combustion chambers are truely stock ECZ-C chambers, just partially polished. And I think, if racing engines would have been covered more and to every modification and to all combinations, it would take another book to cover it all. Or how, Ted, Keith C, Tim, Royce, Jerry C and Charlie B? Also, if more history lessons are needed, that can be found from internet on Ted's and John Mummert's pages or from Eickmans book, right?
By MoonShadow - 11 Years Ago

With turbos there is no time to read it during the runs, but if turbos are off the engine, there is over eleven seconds to read it BigGrin...
