You guys running steel shim head gaskets, what are you using for sealer on them? Block and heads have been resurfaced?

I'm no longer using the original style steel head gaskets, Dan.

I used to spray them with a medium coat of aluminum paint when I did. Let the gaskets dry to the touch, and then begin assembly.

I have no idea where I got the idea of doing that. Never had a problem with sealing though...

The alum paint thing worked back in the day, but not sure if modern paint will work. Copper coat is available in a spray, and should be at the parts store.

The spray on Coppercoat works well. Just be sure to re-torque the steel shim head gaskets after the engine has heat cycled a few times.

I think I'll go with the Coppercoat Glen & Ted mentioned. I think I have a can laying around if I can find it. I wanted to go with the old Ford stuff B5A-19554-A Prefect Sealing Compound but nobody has it. Guy on ebay is selling a small can for 19.00 + shipping. Dont want it that bad.

GOOD point, Glen. I hadn't even thought about the changes in paint formulation. Using aluminum paint today would be a gamble.
