Are there any decent stock replacement pistons available? The ones I have seen are very heavy and the pin is .010 farther down than stock. All the parts store brands look like the same piston.

Royce: You could also try Schumann's sales in Iowa. Another thing, a stock 312 piston I believe uses a different width, wider ring in one position, than a 292. Not the best for high performance possibly. However, I might be corrected on this info. Question; wouldn't the pin being further down the piston bring the top of the piston closer to the deck, which is an advantage?

My understanding is that Egge is the only maker of cast pistons with the original compression height.  As for rings, 292 and 312s are the same width.

I recently purchased a set of new standard bore Silv-O-Lite cast pistons specific for a 312 that were manufactured in Nov of 2006 which had a compression height of 1.760”.  Also looked at a new set of Badger pistons for a 272 that were manufactured in Feb of 2005 and the compression height on those is 1.763”.  Afraid neither of these brands are any help in regards to getting a piston that will be closer to the top of the bore.  If memory is not failing me, the older TRW's had a compression height of 1.770" which was marginally better but not much more help in regards to getting the piston closer to the deck.

RB. As Frank suggested, you might want to contact J.Mummert. Also, he is now advertising a forged piston specifically for stock rods. Since you are a "known" guy, maybe you can get a discount?!!
