I am having a problem keeping the pin located on the shifting linkage in the slotted arm of the neutral safety switch on my 1955 Ford with a 272 (lower steering column located just outside of the firewall). The nss bracket has an alignment "tooth" that fits into an open slot on the steering column and is held in place with a u-clamp around the steerng column. The nss is attached on the front side of the bracket towards the radiator. When in park, the pin is in the slotted arm on the nss and protrudes out about a quarter inch past the slotted arm. When the car is shifted to low, the pin slips out of the slotted arm completely. Then the car won't start. Apparently the shifting linkage with the pin is not parallel to the nss bracket although it looks as though it is.

Can somebody give me any tips to try and remedy this situation? Where can I get a new nss bracket (maybe mine is worn out)?

There should be 2 alignment teeth, and 2 slots for them to fit into. Sounds like you need to losten the clamp and look at that alignment. Also if you install a 58 switch the car will start in park or neutral...
