The second link looks like it could be the original part in the heater plenum. It's an early form of climate control that uses a bimetal strip to vary the vacuum to the valve on the manifold. The vacuum opens the valve on the manifold, to test just connect it to a vacuum source when the car has warmed up and running then try the heater fan. If it opens you'll start to get hot air, fingers crossed.

I used a water valve like that one on my 54 and it worked. Just make sure it is a "vacuum opens" and not the other way. There are both kinds. You will not get as much control of the temperature with these as with the original water valves. Some way the originals were made to allow adjusting the open position to relate to the dash control lever. All you will get from these newer ones is either on or off. No in between settings. Otherwise works great.
