I have just replaced my third mechanical fuel pump in 26,000 miles. I have been using 390FE style pumps,as I do not need any vacuum fittings and they are easy to get. I have used Carter and Ford pumps. They all fail at the pivot point at the end of the arm. I was told that the 390 style pump would be OK in a y block. Was I misled?

A 390 fuel pump is just fine! I use a Holley performance mechanical pump for a 390 and it appears to be ok. I did have one fail a few years ago, the spring popped out under the pump arm and ended up in my oil pan! I spoke to Holley about this, and of course they said they have never heard of this happening before!!!! (YEH RIGHT!)  When I ordered a replacement pump, I noticed the part # had changed and that there was better reinforcement for the spring! 

I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

I'm using a 390 fuel pump on my new rebuilt 312 and am wondering about the yblock providing too much stroke because it is putting out 8 psi. and  causing carb problems. I had to install a fuel pressure regulator and adjust it down to 5psi. to keep the 600 Holley from flooding.  Dave

I may have a fuel pressure problem also, as my vacuum gauge vibrates rapidly around the reading (13in/hg) on my rebuilt 292.
This indicates a lean or rich setting which i cannot tune out, so i suspect too much fuel pressure.
Will test on the week-end.
I have one of those chromed fuel pumps with no vacuum pipes, i saw one on eBay advertised as high pressure.

Can a weaker spring be installed, or perhaps the original spring shortened?

Don't know your set-up, but 13 vacuum is low, may indicate a timing problem,,,,?

Maybe an issue with the eccentric on the camshaft. Are you certain the cam has not been changed? Also check the block to be sure thee is no material being hit by the pump arm.

Hmmm. I wonder if the Y block eccentric might have a tad more lift than the FE series.
