I need a recommendation on a valve spring compression tool. I have the kind you use with the head on and fill the camber with air, but it doesn't seem to work with the head off ( no support for the valve).

I just use a mechanical hand compression tool you can buy from NAPA. They wook fine and are not expensive.

Rono Not sure if the situation is the same at US Auto Parts Stores but up here North of The Border many Parts Stores will lend those types of items as long as a deposit is left.Thats how I disassembled my Heads when I redid the Motor a few Years ago.

Yes, you can rent them from certain parts stores down here too. Not sure if NAPA does that, but I know Auto Zone does and maybe Car Quest. I guess it depends on how often you may need to use the tool.
