My 272 engine has 4 pieces that fits under the stations for the rocker arms and I was wondering if the purpose of them is to oil the valves springs? They have one hole on the bottom that is positioned between 2 valves springs thanks

Hi Timmy,  I think you are describing the oil baffles that go under the rocker arm stands.  Ted said that Ford probably quit using them as a cost-cutting move, makes sense.  A '54 or '55 engine is therefore more likely to have them than a later one.  They are designed to keep excessive oil from spraying on the valve stems and being sucked into the intake ports.  The umbrella valve seals leave something to be desired.  My '57 is going to get a set of the baffles because I'm getting a puff of smoke when I let off to shift gears, then hit the throttle again.  Indicates oil going is past the intake valves (hopefully) when at high vacuum, foot off the accelerator.  You should have eight of them in total, four per head.
