I am taking out my engine from my 56 Fairlane and replacing a few parts. I am thinking about changing my canister type oil filter to a spin on oil filter. Can someone tell me what adapter I need and what all I need to be aware of in this change? Thanks

I purchased an original Ford one from a later model off E-Bay instead of an aftermarket. It went on easily and works fine on my 1956. A lot easier to get the screw on around the PS lines..Good Luck

You can get an oil filter adapter from Mac's Auto Parts or T-Bird Products. (I am sure others sell them too). They are worth about $30.00 US for the kit. 

I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

Make sure the three holes in the adapter are at the top, otherwise you will lose the oil in the galleries when you change the filter.

 I have a slightley different slant,every time i change the gasket on the adaptors ther is sludge on the botem of the oil cavity. my solution to that and oil flow is i drill 3 1/4 in holes opesit to the oblong hole and i keep the adaptor positioned where the oblong hole is close to oilpump in port. This insures oil enteres the spin on from 2sides. oil never drains from the pump as modern spin ons have a check valve. when changing oil i refill the base befor removeing the old filter,as with oil covering the pickup ther is no drainback .have proven this to my self after sitting for 2to 3 months my oil presure hits 60 as the engine lights up. at new filter time there is a lag of several seconds. some guyes fill the spin on but that can be mesey and you do not need oil driping as leak detection is more difficult  .Iam sure this will create some discusion but that is always fun

Not sure why you are getting slug with the modern detergent oils. I fill my spin on filter about 2/3 and have no problems as most of it is absorbed into the paper and the small amount in the centre just rolls around without running out.

when you have a cavitywher ther is no flow you get sludge also sending oil at 50 psi threw 1 side of a full flow filter makes no sence.look at the part of a 302 wher the filter ataches,360 degrees of flow into filter. if 1 studeys flow of liquid it flows the line of least resistance.. why does a spin on filter have several holes to charge the filter,as it flowes rhrew the paper it comes out the center to i large hole,when cold the element moves and oil bypasses the paper,so the more even flow the shorter the by pass cycle

How often do you do your oil changes? I've never seen any sludge on mine but it gets an oil changed every couple of thousand miles. 

have you removed the adaptor,also how many miles on the engine. as far as detergent oils they have bin around for .40years. the old original  cartrege filter had oil going direct from oil port into the can and around the filter,it was a beter filter than the spinon but mesey and dificult to change,gasket comeing out of place etc. just my take. cliff
