anyone know where I can get a good clear picture of how to install timing chain. I know that there is 12 link pins between them, and the dots face the drivers side. but all the pictures I have found are quite fuzzy when I try to see them.

Go to this Internet address...
http://www.forelpublishing.com/demo/jrwells/demo10157.pdf
view the title  -  DEMO - 1957 Ford Car and Thunderbird Shop Manual

- After toggling the above manual sample, inthe upper left hand corner of the web page, advance through the PDF file demo pages to demo page 20...
This will bring you to the actual Ford shop manual page 1-18 of Part I Engines, Chapter 1 General Engine Service, Section 6
- scroll down on page 1-18 to the picture of the assembled timing chain and gears (figure 22)...
- notice the 'dots' at the 3 o'clock position of both the crank and camshaft gears, and the twelve chain pins between the two dots on the two gears.

Hope this helps.  Smile

You beat me, Chuck!  I'd like to blame the cold weather here, but that's stretching things.  Smile

Special note on the timing chain install; If anyone is using the old Ford Y-Block book, by Eickmann, the photo of the chain install is "incorrect" as the engine pictured is upside down..

While on this subject, how much play (in inches) on the slack side of a used chain is acceptable?  Thanks

Up to a ½” is acceptable for the stock chain set.
