I am trying to put a 272 engine in my 1955 ford and I have the bell housing on the engine and every time try to put it in the new throw out bearing gets knocked off the clips. I got help today and the same problem trying to line everything up is tough. Should I take the transmission out first? thankks

SmileI was wondering can I first bolt the bell housing to the transmission then just line up the engine to the transmission?

Can you take out the trans, bolt everything together on the floor and then install?

When I did the installation in my 54, the trans was out. I would push the trans back, install the engine and then push the trans up and bolt in.

Timmy:

Yes, you can put the bellhousing with the fork and throwout bearing on the transmission.  Eliminates the bearing hassle.  Also, a couple of line up studs about 3-4 inches long in the lower holes of the block are a help, after it slides together, take out the studs and put the bolts in.
